race day

what are the fender flares off of?? i always wondered if the more rounded style flares would look any good on a 1st or 2nd gen truck....

oh and i really like the idea of rear brakes being controlled by the steering box... whats the specs on that??

i've been waiting for someone to ask about those fender flares-was thinking about it today while i was cleaning it.....1982 amc eagle..those are the best parts on that car,but it would be nice if they were bigger around. and as for the steering brakes,i will be building those soon(i have to)and it will all be posted.

damn, not exactly something you see every day. very cool none the less. i was thinking about a set of 3rd gen style flares for my truck. they look good!

they definitely look better than the rust that is under them.had 'em,so,figured i'd use 'em

so when i swapped the carbs it turned out the holley was in less than stellar condition,so i ordered up a rebuild kit for it.got it together yesterday and put it on.i still had a bit of a stumble so i searched a bit furthur.turned out the vacuum advance was leaking and inoperative,so i wasn't getting enough advance on the timing.i could set it forward, but then it was too hard to start.tried finding a new advance unit, but it seems they are obsolete(you can buy a whole distributer with one but i didnt want to spend that much)i remembered i had a good dist from a 351w,so i changed the drive gear over and tossed that in-problem solved.

now it's time to get going on the steering brakes-i have this explorer 8.8 hanging around doing nothing,so i figured i could put it's brakes to use.

bronco2002.jpg
that's what i need off it.

bronco2006.jpg
found the first big problem with using these parts....the rotor on the left is from the explorer that is donating it's calipers;the one on the right is from the lincoln 8.8 in the bronco.note the difference in thickness.now i have to either make the ex calipers fit around the lincoln rotors,or try to clamp the lincoln calipers down on the thinner ex rotors

bronco2005.jpg
so heres the answer-since the lincoln pads are worn to nothing already (and i'm not buying new ones)there isn't room to push the lincoln piston out further.so i took the ex pads to the belt sander and thinned them down to fit around the thicker rotor(remember this is a single purpose rig that will never see the street)

now for the next issue-mounting the bracket.the ex bracket mounting is nothing like the lincoln one,so i had to get head scratching.the ex bracket needed to be mounted 1" further out,and had a different bolt pattern.the forward part of the lincoln bracket was in the way,so i cut it off.for what i'm doing two bolts will be plenty.

bronco2007.jpg
to make a mounting bracket i cut the end off the ex housing.it's inside diameter is exactly the same as the outside of the lincoln housing end,so it fits around it perfectly.i cut this piece in half and welded one piece onto each end of the housing to make a bracket to mount the second caliper.

bronco2010.jpg
both calipers mounted=the rear(lincoln)one is for stopping, the front is for steering.

bronco2011.jpg
with the diff being used for steering i needed to loosen up the posi,so i took the spring out.with all the weight over the drive axle traction will not be an issue.

bronco2003.jpg
note the ultra rare high input 8.8:D.that's all i can do on it for now-still need to build the master setup that works off the steering so those newly mounted calipers actually do something.
