R12 or 134a ?????

I have 134a. I bought that when you could get it for about $65 a jug (30 lbs.). Probably still have 24 lbs. Haven't had to use much of that becauce my (our) R134a cars haven't had any problems

we still have about 10 lbs of r12, a full 30 lbs thing of r22 lol.. and no r134a.. i used the last to fix my b2 and my gf's s10 a/c

Its always good to have a little set back. I have about 110 lbs of 134, the 15 lbs of 12 and a brand new 30lb can of r22 which is getting harder to get. Havent had to get into that puron stuff yet thank goodness... The r22 is stricly for my use..:yahoo:

problem w/ that is-- it could be converted without leaving the adapters on the service ports. when i got that ranger i sold, it had r12 ports.. i checked it to see before i filled it and it was r134a in it. turns out the guy leaves the adapters w/ his gauges and doesn't leave them on the vehicles. his old 83 ford fullsize is the same way.

sad, but people do it. usually if its been converted, the ports are correct for the freon

I happen to know that on the early 90's T-birds, in the last few years of R-12, you can't leave the conversion fittings on. The hood doesn't close.

Gah!!!! I wish I could get my hands on some R12. I'm ASE Certified to handle it and still can't get it. Can't find the stuff.

my dad ordered his from a local place here in memphis thru the semi body shop he works at.. doubt that helps you any but... lol.

Ha, not really.

My SIL's fiance works for one of the big HVAC companies near Harrisburg and he can't get the stuff for lack of a supplier. That basically means there isn't any in the state.

most better snapon machines have hoses that will hook directly into the r12 fittings without conversion bits, friend of mine is going to be doing mine in my project lebaron in the event it ever gets done lol

My 1992 Accord still has R12 in the system and still blows cold. As far as I know it's never even needed a recharge. However today I had to keep the AC on full blast the whole ride home to maintain a comfortable temperature, so it may need a charge soon. If I ever need to service it, I'm converting it to R134a.

Man, thanks to all you guys for responding this is my first post. I really appreciate all of the guidance and opinions.

If you need a charge, you have a leak and you need to check into that before you convert it. R134a is a smaller/lighter molecule than R12. R134a also runs at higher pressures than R12. I would leak worse if you don't find and repair the leak before doing the conversion.

Even if you found some, you probably wouldnt want to pay for it. 5 years ago we were selling it for 42 bucks a pound. Thats the last time I had to use any. I dont know if it is even legal to sell it anymore. Although they did work better Im glad there gone. Tired of fooling with all the conversion crap. Most systems worked ok but some really sucked after you converted them because 134a is a 10% less efficient than 12.

You can still finr R-12 really easily on eBay, but of course the prices are outrageous. I believe you also have show them a copy of your AC license to prove you are certified to handle it.

Never thought about looking there. There used to be a product on the market called freeze 12 that did an ok job of replacing r12 but I dont know even if its still around. 134a is all I fool with anymore in mobile equipment.
