It should be wriitten on the compressor or on top of the grill by the catalyst. If yours is a 98, you got r-134a. They quit usin r-12 or freon in the late 80s or early 90s
No, 1994 was the transition year (on RBVs anyway). The transition actually happened midway through the model year. As such, some '94s will have R-12, and some R-134a.
R-134a vehicles will be clearly labeled with yellow "NON-CFC" tags on or around the fittings, as well as on a sticker on top of the evaporator housing. The fittings themselves will be different as well (R-12 fittings are similar to standard Schrader tire valves, R-134a fittings have no external threads).
