Have any of you tried R-409 in your R-12 system? It has many of the same properties of 12 is still made and legal to buy with license. 409 is used in commercial refrigeration units like my three door reach in. My brother has used it for years in his F-350 and I haven't gotten around to converting my Ranger to 134 yet. I have been using it in mine for 5 or so years.

I think I'll try that. Are the fittings the same? Someone told me to try "freeze 12".

As far as I know they are the same. He (my brother) just takes the jug and connects it to the R-12 charging gauges.

Don't really know what it is exactly, we get it from our A/C supplier but I imagine parts stores would carry it too.

I've used Freeze12 before and it has reasonable performance. Keep in mind that if you use it in a system with any sort of warranty, however, most companies will refuse to honor the warranty. Check your lines for "black death" before you charge the system too. If you see any signs, I wouldn't expect great performance out of the system. Even if you have no other debris in the system, this stuff coats the condenser and seriously reduces the system's capacity to remove heat.
