really quick fellas.... Just wanted to "confirm" on something.

I'm changing the differential fluid/gasket (possibly diff cover as well).. but I wanted to make sure my 89 2.9L 2WD Ranger XLT Long Bed has:

1. the Ford 7.5 Inch (or does it have the 8.8 inch...? if so, how would I know)

2. the gear oil weight/type is 80-90W (right? or is it 140?... crap! I dont remember). :bawling:

3. Should I use the synthetic gear oil (like Lucas or Royal Purple? or the basic ones)

Keep in mind this truck has 113k original miles, and as the second owner, I dont think this has been changed... at all. :icon_confused:

any thoughts?

thanks fellas! :icon_thumby:

The door sticker will have an axle code on the bottom line. The tech articles on the home page here has an axle code (decoder). On synthetics that's the best to use. Synthetics withstand higher temps, higher pressure and takes much longer to break down.

Hope this helps!

I used 75w90 with no issues but the new oil Ford uses is 80w90. Synthetic is always a good choice but just changing it is good too considering most never get changed.

Any 90 weight oil such as 75w-90 or 80w-90 will work fine. Synthetic isn't that necessary, though it certainly wouldn't hurt. That's your call.

thanks fellas. I"m went with the 80-90W Hypoy Synthetic blend.

thanks again for all the help!
