Hello there,

I own a 1989 Ranger with a 2.3L engine, My stock filter box is broken, near the back side so dirty air is getting into my motor......
I plan on placing a CAI since it will be approx. the same amout of cash spent to replace and it will make it look nice and give it a throaty sound...

my question is this , I do not have a MAF Sensor or at least a circular one like my 2003 elantra did , so if i do place a CAI, where would i place the sensor (it looks like a smaller diameter O2 sensor )that goes on the original box (I will place pics if needed)

I have searched through 12 pages regarding this CAI and have only found usless info or links that might help me but are outdated.. thanks for your time and im sorry if this is in the wrong section

what sensor are you talking about........you have a map sensor that does not go in the intake......

ok ok sorry for the confusion .. i have a sensor on the top section of the stock filter box ... and i do not seem to have a MAF sensor as its an 89 this is my first "older" truck so i know to everyone else its a simple motor but like i said im used to an 03 Elantra ... ill post a pic of what im talking baout as soon as im off work ... untill then ill try once mroe to find the info online somewere

you can ignore the two hoses that go to the air filter box... one of them is a thermostat for the warm air inlet for cold days and I believe the other is a filtered air inlet for the EGR system or whatever that vacuum solenoid thing is on the passenger fender...

that being said, if you're in Oregon in Portland or Salem area I'll give you my stock air filter box off of my '90 (same as your '89), it'll need 10 minutes with some starting fluid and a rag but hey... actually what I have might be different than your '89, the '89 I had had a formed radiator type hose just a lot bigger, my '90 without MAF (they changed to MAF in mid '90) had a different harder plastic formed hose, I don't think I have that hose anymore and the top of the box is different between the two setups.

for the throatier sound you can remove the air muffler thing that's inside it if you have the same type I had.

i think ill be taking a photo of the motor ... i do not have the same hose i believe ... stuck at work again lol ill do my best to get a photo before i leave though .. thanks so much for the help it is very helpful ill take out the sensors and show them to but i think it will be safe w/o them it sounds :)

Updated with pics!!!

alright finally found the time to obtain pics of this unknown sensor ... the sensor has 2 hose like adapters on it one goes towards the fire wall and the other towardes the bottom of the battery box

here is the complete air intake system

so here is the exterior top were all the wires feed off of the airbox

as toy can see in both these photos, there is no MAF sensor...

this is what it looks from the exterior of the air box when both tube like electric hoses are removed

the inside of the air box

and there is the actual sensor from inside the box...

i am not sure what you are asking but the sensor is called a bimetal sensor it adjusts the vacuum motor to control intake air as the engine warms up

yeah, like I said, ignore it... mine isn't hooked up, I actually blocked off the valve on the intake and am using the same housing on my turbo engine... they used the same filter on the 4.0 pushing like 155 horse, figured it was good enough for 180hp on the turbo 2.3.

I don't believe there's an air muffler in that setup, you might gain a little performance if you pulled the reinforcement wire out of the inside of the hose... just make sure you keep on top of air filter changes.

the problem with CAI setups is they are generally the opposite... the stock setup pulls it's air from in front of the radiator, it takes a bit of work to get air out of a cold location with the cone filters.

ok sounds good ... im just trying to obtain the same amount of MPG as im getting with my broken filter box ... im planning on placing my CAI were the old airbox pulls the cold air from... the grill area. then place a nylon over the filter so that cleaning is a bit easier (helped with my elantra much ) but yea if i find a cheaper stock set up ill just do that instead .. seems the CAI will be cheaper to do .. thanks again for all the help

if you can find the parts in a junk yard that method should be the cheapest.

I'm assuming it's the slots in the rear of the base of the air box that are broken? common, the same base is used on the early first gen explorers (same piece is on my '91 explorer, broken too) and whatever year 2.9L ranger I got my air filter box from, I assume '89 because of no MAF which was important for my turbo engine since it has an old style VAM.

well id rather do CAI .. it will improve MPG or should i do the stock box with a K&N box filter??? im lost now ... sorry i am making all the members irritated im just lost :(

it's all good..

you won't improve gas mileage with a filter change on these... the stock filter will flow enough air for twice the power of a stock 2.3, but it won't hurt either.

ok :) thanks alot guys ... I will probably go to the junk yard and then paint it so i can dress up the engine !!
