Ok so Ive been looking into puting a V8 in my 85 Ranger Id really like to swap in a 302 but Ive have a recently rebuilt 289 out of a Fairlane just sitting at the shop I work at and it is the perfect price. My problem is I dont know the first thing about Ford motors so my question is what is the differance in the 302 and the 289 and would I have to do anything special to use it in a swap instead of a 302. Thanks for the help.

No difference...other than the displacement.

Yea, there are a couple of little differences. The 289's head accessory bolt holes aren't the same size as a later 80's-up 302, so you can't swap accessory brackets easily. You'll need a fox body dual sump pan, but one with a dipstick in the pan. Only a few of these were used in production in the early 80's, good luck finding one. The 289 was a good engine, just it's harder to swap into a Ranger. Start with a roller 5.0 from any mid 80's-up and it'll be an easier swap.
