Okay, so my next stereo project is going to be a stereo-less stereo. :shok: Yes, REALLY! I have one small question .....

All my life I never had to play with or pay attention to the fuse used in an aftermarket stereo for the amp turn on lead. Since I won't have an aftermarket head unit now I was going to simply run a line off the amp's power supply and fuse it to suit.

Soooooo, what size fuse? I'm thinking an small 1 Amp inline fuse should do the trick. Heck, I wouldn't even need to add any length to the pigtails, either. lol

Yes, no, maybe so?

Let me know please. Thanks!

i believe your talking about the remote wire, lil blue one that goes to your amp to tell it to turn on.....there are no fuses in them, and you dont need one, ummmm prolly ever, unless you have an extreme OCD/ paranoia. :icon_thumby:

So the circuitry within the amp will only take what is needed and not be overloaded? (I don't know if they regulate the Voltage coming into that part or not)

I ask only because head unit's used to come with that in place, at least back in the '90's they did. I don't know why they ever stopped (although i'm sure it's because it wasn't necessary and they wanted to save the $0.04/unit).

correct. the amp will only use what is needed. if it gets more than it needs or if something shorts out somewhere along the power source it will go into safety shut off. if you have the ohms wrong and the amp cant handle it it will also shut off. it is just a design built in to the amp to protect it. dont let it happen very much though after to many shut offs it can cause damage to the amp.

stereoless system? so are you running an ipod right off the amp?

Got it. Thanks!

No, i'm running the amp right off the iPod. :D

It's not a big deal, really, but for me, if I don't need to spend money on getting an "aftermarket this" and "aftermarket that" then i'd rather spend the money elsewhere.

Best of all is that i'll have better SQ, stock appearance and real security.

it would work, but i doubt it will have the volume youll want. youd have to set the amps gains to match up with the ipods output voltage. who knows, maybe it will be just what your looking for.

and theres no such thing as sound quality and mp3's?

Today's bench testing has proven that the volume (output/gain matching) is juuuuuust fine. I compared against two Pioneer units, both with an advertised output of 2.2V on the pre-outs ..... and my lil 5th gen Nano happily beat their pants off. lol It wasn't insanely louder, but certainly an audible increase was present. (I know - it's not a comparison against 4V, but this is what I have to work with and it's all a moot point anyway)

The SQ comment was a comparison of the Nano against a stock head unit, in which the Nano easily excels, no comparison.

As much as I hate to say it, it felt good returning the last Pioneer head unit I bought recently. Money saved = money earned (= spent on the truck elsewhere).

i am currently only using an ipod to run both my amps, i sold my eclipse and my new headunit comes in tommorow so since friday when i shipped mine off i havent had a head unit. it sounds ok but there is not much eq adjustment in the ipod except the crappy presets. compressed mp3s do sound crappy but i have all my music backed up in flac lossless so i just convert it to apple lossless and load it up on the ipod and its sounds just as good as a regular cd. Another thing that sucks is always having to reach for the ipod to adjust volume.

did you use a mm on your nano? im getting 1.1-1.2 volts, via online searches. dont give a shit really, glad it worked for you, but would be cool to know a real number?

i didnt do any research, but thats what i was thinking. i though the output voltage from the ipod would be too low. but 1v would get the job done.
