I have a 1988 Bronco 2 with a 5 speed trans it needs a new clutch in it and I have a quick question about the exhaust.Do I need to diconnect the Y pipe at the mainfolds to to pull the trans or can I pull it with out doing that? It's a 4X4 with a 2.9L motor.
Thanks

its a bitch to fight out, sometimes it can be done other times it can't. I can't remember if I had to or not because I swapped to a 3.0L and had to redo the exhaust anyways

It can be pulled out (well, pried) a lot easier than installed.

Drop the exhaust, then once its out, beat the body seam flat and never have to drop it again.

I guess I will be pulling the Y pipe.Any thought on how to get the Y pipe bolts out with out breaking them?
Thanks

I have cut the y-pipe off just under the transmission and then welded it back on.

A 1/2 inch or bigger impact wrench, impact extensions perhaps with a U-joint, a lot of patience, and some Kroil.

When it's out, run a tap through the exhaust manifold threads and replace the bolts with stainless and coat them with Nev-R-Seez. Then, you don't have to worry about weakening the body seams by beating them flat, as the Y-pipe will forevermore be a LOT easier to get out.

I'll give it a try thanks MAKG

break em and use a stud remover .......... then do the rest of what Micheal said

Is it just the 88 that is so hard to get in and out. I did my 86 Ranger with 5 spd and 86 BII with auto and both poped right out and back in without binding or catching on the Y pipe.

Well being working on Y pipes bolts for about 2 hours and they have not moved or broke.1st with 1/2 inch impact 2nd 1/2 inch breaker bar 3rd 1/2 inch breaker bar with 3ft cheater bar.Any other thoughts on how to get them out?
Thanks

if you can get to it to weld it back.....cut the pipe.

I'm thinking about that COPPERHEAD85 I just tryed again to get them out still want move.

Well I got it out and back in with out dropping the Y pipe.I just wiggled it around on the tran jack and got it out an in with no problems. Thanks for every ones help on this.
