Last Friday I took my truck out, heard a pop and the engine revved. I have all gears except 2nd. Assuming I stripped something, the shifter still has the same feel...

I have a 3.0 2wd trans laying around, I know the gears are different.

Is there more to it than just swapping the gear sets?

Is the tailshaft different 2wd to 4wd? And will the 4.0 4wd tail shaft fit behind the 3.0 gear set?

The 3.0 trans will not bolt to your 4.0. The pattern is different.

The 2wd and 4wd tailshaft spilne count AND diameter AND overall length are different.

The 3.0 and 4.0 gear sets are different. Both in tooth count AND ratio.

You can swap the 3.0 2wd gears onto the 4.0 4wd mainshaft, and then put the new hybrid 3.0/4.0 trans (all stuffed into the 4.0 case) into your ranger, but you WILL NOT be happy with the results! The ratios are so different you'll hate it the 1st time your drive it. I swapped a 4.0 trans into a 2.9 vehicle once cause I was in a pinch, but that lasted EXACTLY 52 hours till I could get the correct 2.9 trans built.

(4.0L Engines) 3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 / Reverse = 3.40
(All Other Engines) 3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 / Reverse = 3.40

Since he wheels the thing I'd expect him to be happier with the hybrid trans. Lower first gear.

I personally have a 4.0 trans on my 2.9 and don't mind it at all. It's a bit harder to start out when I'm towing, but hitting 4th out of 3rd doesn't bog the engine as bad when I am loaded down.

I will love it. I'm looking for a lower gearset. The 4.0 gears, 1354 low, and 5.13 aren't enough. Besides its an off-road only ride.

So besides all the common info you gave, do you have an answer for my question?

In my 4.0 case, will the 3.0 guts drop right in, with the 4.0 tailshaft and housing?

My truck is on my uncle's farm 45min from my house, I just don't wanna run into a surprise of needing more parts, and I don't really wanna disassemble any gear sets.

You will have to remove all the synchros, keepers, and press the gears off the main shafts to transfer them. No other way about it if you have a 2wd donor trans.

K thanks.

Is it possible to reuse the bearings, or is it one of those things where they tend to get messed up during removal, like not using setup bearings to build a diff...?

I really don't wanna buy a rebuild kit, the 3.0 trans only has 110K mi on it.

On a side note, besides the chassis and chassis wiring, that transmission was the last original part on my ride, 285K mi...

if you have both shafts side by side and swap everything between them you are good to go, I'm wondering if it's not something on the top plate though... with both of them side by side it'll be easy to tell and you'll still have all the right parts...

No need to setup the bearings like in a diff. There is a selective shim at the one end, you just take a quick depth measurement and put the right shim in when you are done. And no, the bearings don't usually get messed up taking them out. Just don't go nuts on them with a hammer.

I'm thinking I took out the teeth on the gear that the ring engages. There isn't much metal there to speak of.

I'm not a noob in a trans, I've done T5s 465s, rock crushers, 1 ZF5, and a NV4500. Just never been into one of my M5s. I'm probably just over thinking/ worrying about it because of where my truck is.
