questions about 93 f150

Ive decided to part ways with my ranger. 1 problem after the other it seems. can anybodyanswer a few qs for me? im looking at a 93 f150 and am wondering what kinda mileage the 5.0 5 speed 4x4 gets and how much i can pull with it? my ranger gets horrible mileage, so nything above 10 is good to me. whats the max rated towing weight? i pulled a car with my ranger and 2 days later the spider gears exploded. i know im not pulling what a diesel will pull, but i cant even pull both my 4 wheelers on 1 trailer. its just the 3.0.

Not sure what a 5.0L gets for fuel economy or so forth, I have heard some people whine that the 5.0L F-150 wasn't all that great for hauling/towing.

I have a '95 F-150 4x4 with a 300-6 (4.9L) and I'm happy with it. I'm getting around 16 mpg around town, thinking of trying to regear a little lower and might increase my fuel economy (it's a work truck hauling around a bunch of tools all the time). I've even heard chevy lovers admit that the 300 was a great motor...

Oh, yea, what is wrong with your Ranger? Mine got 19-21 mpg around town with a cap and tools, and 20-22 mpg around town with a tonneau cover. 30" tires and 3.73 gears. And it had no problems towing a BII several hundred miles a couple times...

well I too am parting with my 91 ranger. Love it but had an option to trade it for a 94 f150 xlt 4x4 5.8. i am guessing between 12 - 17 mpg.

My ranger is so sluggish man. i cant pull anything with it, it wont climb my driveway without a running start. its got 3.73s with 32s. turd

i had a 89 5.0 5 speed 355 gears and got any where from 10 to 12 mpg and then i got 4.9 same everything else and millage went up to 17 and pulled a lot better

the 300's a real torque monster for its size, and the reliability is just insane. in a fullsize, i'd probably take it over a 302. MUCH better economy too.

If you hate the 3.0, why not look for a 4.0? My '91 4.0 got 21mpg highway before I put 31" mud tires on it--then it lost maybe one mpg. It got 13-14mpg in town. I had no problems towing and it would pull most hill with our Casita trailer without the cruise control popping out.

My 5.8 '89 Bronco got 14mpg with the cruise at 65mph. In town it got 10 or less. Nothing would make me get back in one of those.

Just looking on fueleconomy.gov, their mileage estimates are consistant with what I got, these are 93 4x4 F150 auto:

4.9= 13/17
5.0= 12/17
5.8= 11/15

These are 4x4 '93 Ranger auto:

3.0= 16/20
4.0= 15/20

My '89 F-150 with the 4.9L, 2wd, 4-spd stick, 3.08 gears, 29" tires gets about 15-16 mpg hauling crap around town. I got 19 mpg hauling a bed full of firewood and pulling a log splitter 150 miles.

If you look at fuel economy.gov they give you their number and then an average of what actual owners have submitted. The 5.0 and 5.8 owner average numbers are right on par with the official number. The 4.9's owner average number is about 2-3 mpg higher than the official number.

The 4.9 is an all around better truck motor than the 5.0. Having pulled big trailers with both my 89 4.9L and a 94 with a 5.0L, I'll take the 4.9 hands down any day.

My numbers are generally close to EPA numbers in larger vehicles. In the tiny cars I've owned, the EPA is way low.

Yeah, the 4.9 is a better truck motor than the 5.0--they are the same size and even though it's peak numbers are quite a bit lower, its long stroke means it's running faster (piston speed) and filling the cylinders better at low rpms. It should get better mileage because of that.

the 5.0s are good race motors when they are in a car in trucks they are ok but like said the 4.9 is the better engine if you compare them togther. ive some 4.9s do some things they shouldnt have been able to do awesome low end torque ive seen em pull through mud holes that a light yota with better tires couldnt slug through

well you know what they say...a 4.9 will break things a 5.0 could only dream of breaking.
