I know I know, the 302 is easier to do. But I am pretty crafty and up for the challenge of doing a 351W. I took out EVERYTHING out of the engine compartment including the heater box (heat never worked anyway). There was no A/C on this truck. I haven't done a 3" body lift yet, but plan on doing so. I'm going to bend back the firewall lip as well.

The 351W I might get is out of a 69 Mustang (C9). The thing I am worried about is the exhaust manifolds. I don't want to do a custom set of headers to keep the cost down. Are there any exhaust manifolds out there that will bolt on to this motor without having clearance problems? And which oil pan do I need to clear the cross member? Any other mods I need to know about?

Lastly, should I go C4 or C6 trans with this motor? Which bellhousing/adapters do I need? I already removed the rotted out factory tranny crossmember and have a new one in which I can drill my own holes for it.

The driver's side 351W manifold should fit as is. For the passenger side, look for one from a V8 Mustang II

Thanks...So I take it the passenger side will be the problem area. I can just grind away part of the frame right there if I need to. This is a 2WD Ranger btw which should make things much easier. Which motor mounts should I get? Also which oil pan is best? Oh and after doing some research, I will definitely be using the C4 trans!

i wouldn't grind the frame to make the exhaust fit... what i would do is make custom headers... you can do it yourself, take the exhaust manifold gasket, trace that onto some steel, cut it out, then start welding tubing to that...

You want Fox body Mustang mounts and oil pan.

Both parts are also available on other Ford vehicles. The pan is not the same for 302/351, so just look for a "dual sump" style pan.

Yes I know the 351 was not available in a fox Mustang. Yes, I know how to cross reference parts.

The Dual sump 351 Windsor pan was used in the 1980-1991 Crown Vics and Lincolns

Thanks guys...just picked up the motor today. I'm not sure I want to do the custom headers thing because I don't have any welding experience or the tools. I'll see how tight of a fit it really is and then go from there. This motor isn't much bigger than the 4 banger I pulled out with all the damn accessories and hoses and such. I'll get some pics here in a day or so. I'm going to have the motor rebuilt.

That hole you made when you pulled the 4 banger out is going disappear quick when you drop that 351 in there.

Hey guys...which oil pump should I get? I read somewhere that in order for the motor to clear the Ranger cross member, I need to get a shorter oil pump. Is this the 302 oil pump? Should I get a high volume one? I see Jegs and Summit sell them for like $40. Is this the one I need?

some explorer manifolds from 95-01 5.0 might work, or some 67 manifolds from a 289 might work(i know my 67 289 out of a supposed mustang the ps and ds manifolds have plenty of room. im useing stock oil pump on my 289, (which had a front sump, which now has a dual sump)and heres the pan you need

Exhaust manifolds? You do not want the Explorer ones.

Oil Pump? Use whatever works in a "dual sump" 351 application. You'll find the info in the autoparts store websites.

he asked about manifolds in the first post and the oil pump dosen't matter as long as you get the pickup the matches the oil pan, the stock 351w oil pump from over the counter at a parts store will work fine(or if the one you have is good it will work:icon_thumby:

If you look at the Explorer manifolds, you would not recommend them!

High volume pumps are almost always taller than their standard volume counterparts. In the Ford dual sump pan, you will have take a hammer and dimple the pan if you want to use a HV pump.

You won't need a HV pump if the bearing clearances are near stock, the journals are round, oil holes chamfered, and you are not turning over 6000 rpm for more than a few seconds at a time.

FYI: You cannot use a 302 pump in a 351W. They use different sized pump drives.
