So I have a 1986 ford ranger with the 2.9 in it my fuel pump went out and we changed the fuel pump plug and then it when out again and we changed the plug, pig tail fuel pump, filter, fuel lines and it went out a 3rd time and I now think it’s a electrical problem I changed the battery terminal connectors and there’s still something wrong with the electrical issue I need help to figure this out if yall have anything that could help that would be very much appreciated because I’ve been working on this truck for 5 and a half months now and and can’t figure out the problem but I’m also missing my secondary electrical panel that goes on the fire wall the dude who had it before me stripped it out and heat shrinked all the wires together so I think that that could be part of the reason but h have no clue I need help plz anything helps

Can you hear the fuel pumps run when you initially turn the key to on but do not start the engine? You have two fuel pumps on that truck.

You're saying fuel pump, singular, which pump is going out? There's two in that system, one low pressure in the tank and one higher pressure in the frame rail. If the low pressure in tank pump is going out that can take out the high pressure pump

I’m also a bit concerned about the sound of a fuse panel missing… that can cause all sorts of issues that I don’t even really want to think of...

The panel under the hood is the main distribution and under it is the relays. I know there’s a pump relay, and I’m pretty sure a pump fuse there. The panel under the dash on the drivers side is all sorts of needed things too.

Have you measured voltage at the pump?

There really isn't an under hood fuse/relay panel in an 86.

Pictures of the mess might help.
