I hope this is right spot.... but I have a 2001 ford ranger 4.0.... I was wondering what 4.0 years I can use in it?.

Ford switched to the SOHC 4.0 in 2001. The motor itself was pretty much the same from 01 to 11 (although first ~4 years or so had timing chain guide/tensioner issues), but the electrical stuff changes over the years. You can make any 01-11 ranger 4.0 work, but the closer the motor is to the head of your truck the easier it will be.

true...2001 is ranger solid...best safe bet is 2001-2007 .





the cammer was also available before 2001 in the explorer..and there were many...not to mention the mustang variant later on.

long block 98-11 can be potentially acceptable. really 97. there are rolling changes and some issues.




so that leaves two sub classes...
97-2000, 08-11... thats from my place i buy from..d.a.r.

theres balance shaft/no balance shaft...49 state heads and oil spraybar or not ect...

there are calibration and injector differences almost yearly...its a rolling patchwork of hell.

its why you get it all for swaps....complete running donor. everything.

My 2001 has always had the timing chain rattle.. My buddies 2004 engine self destructed due to timing chain issues..

I would go 06 or newer if it were me.
