okay im the proud new owner of a 91/92 (door date says 11/91) 2.3 w/ m50 trans. i bought it and the tranny was skrewd (i knew this b4 i bought it, 400 bux cant complain) the gears and such were sheared im getting a jy tranny but one thing bothers me, there was no fluid in the trans when the top cover was pulled. i seen somewhere on the top of the trans where there was a freeze plug that gets hard and lets all the tranny fluid out. the article also showed the fixes for this prob and id like to get my hands on this article so i can do the fix to the tranny thats going in the trk. also has anybody heard of or attempted/completed a dipstick install on one of the trannys? thanx for the info and any replies are appreciated.

Why would it need a dip stick? You can check the level using the fill hole in the drivers side of the tranny.

On a transmission with three plugs in the back that leak out fluid, its a good idea to check the fluid level pretty often. I can see a huge degree of increased practicality of a dipstick, being able to check it along with the engine oil when filling up at a gas station.

That said, I've never heard of it being done on one of these.

has anybody found the article that i was talking about? i thought it was in the tech section but couldnt find it earlier. yes that is why i want to install one, even if its just a stick that runs from the inspection hole up w/ a threaded tube that the tip is wet when its where it should be and dry when its low and use the tube to top it off/change fluid easier. im going to take pictures later, the gears in my trans are worse than yours littlehorse.

nevermind, found it, shift rail plug maintenance. still want to know about a dipstick, that would be an awesome upgrade in my opinion.
