so i want to put a dana 35 in my 87 ranger. my question is are all the explorer d35's auto locking hubs and i have to convert them to make them man? and if so what do i have to buy to do that? thanks for any help.

Yes, all the later model RBV's came with auto locking hubs, and if you want to convert to manual,(which i definatly would) all you need is a new set of hubs. You can get them at most parts stores for under a $100. Take you bout 30 mins.

You would also need all the locknuts and stuff from a truck that came with manual hubs. Auto hub parts will NOT work. Also hub kits are a lot more than $100...

No, not all explorers are auto locking hubs. It was an option.

I believe electric t-case/auto hubs were standard and manual t-case/manual hubs were an option, they do exist but are very rare.

explorers came with manual hubs, i got mine from a junk yard for $25 a pair. they had 5 explorers in there and all of them had manual hubs, get that. i go back to get a spair set and all gone. do what i did go to the yard and look, if you find some take every thing up to the bearing , you will need that stuff, remember the way you took it off. good luck

ok thanks. yea i want the manual hubs because thats what i have and they are just better. i will keep my eyes out at the junk yard for the d35 manuals. thanks again.

i have a D35 with auto locking hubs, and i love them they have never failed me, and the best part is you press a button, or shift a knob and forget about it. i would have to say in my personal opinion no conversion needed. but anyway you go, my recomendation to just get hubs new. manuals are more affordable than auto locks. the autos are about $300.00/hub.i have noticed that when you find them at the junk yard they are 9X outta 10 tampered with. a really risky move. just remember its your front end, a lock up would not be pretty in any case. but be safe and good luck on your adventure
