So I’m taking apart my 1994 4.0 OHV for a rebuild, while inspecting the pistons I’ve noticed 3 pistons are just Mahle with a 3 stamped on the dome while the others are Ford Mahle stamped with a 2 on the dome any reasoning on what the numbers on the dome mean and why they might’ve used the different pistons?

no idea, but if reusing same pistons, i would replace them into the same holes you took them out of just in case.... of all the 4's i have taken apart, first i have heard of any different numbers. (not that i was seeking anything though).

cheers

Measure the cylinder bores. Mine needed reboring to oversized pistons...
