question for you doorless guys

jeeps can run with no doors because they have a 3'' lip comming up. cant have nothing less then 3''. i would biuld a set of tube doors or half doors. i know here in washington if you dont have that 3'' lip comein up from the floor then your gunna get a ticket. good luck

I would personally do a half door with a very large chunk cut out.

That way you at least have a lip at the bottom, and you still technically have a door.

My Idea was to make a half door, but leave the the upper part around the window, and put on some snaps all around it and make a canvas (or somethign else) cover to go over the whole door (opending) with a plexi-glass window so that if it starts raining on the trail, or you come to a trial with alot of water, you can seal it up so you aren't filling the cab with mud.

That's just my idea though. I "want" to do this shortly.

EDIT: I was going to ask our family friend today, who is a cop here in WA, what the law was or, if he saw a truck with no doors, tube doors, or half doors, if he would pull them over, or if he thinks other cops would pull you over.
I'll probably ask him tomorrow.

the best way to do it is the way you are thinking. it is preferred by myself as well. i have a tube issue that will impede this eventually so i have to modify it slightly, but will have the same basic setup.

depending on where you live you will definatly be pulled over a few times.

and i do run a lip, and enjoy the leppp...hmmm female lepricons blowin on my junk.

I was always under the impression that the reason Jeeps could run no doors was that they are designed that way from the factory, they are special. I know you can't legally run a car down the road missing body parts unless it is over a certian age. Or, unless the car was never equiped with them. Like my dad's old CJ he had, it never had turn signals, so he didn't legaly have to have them.

So, wouldn't that mean that no matter what kind of lip you have, no doors, tube, and half doors, they are all going to be illegal?

I wonder if you carried the real door in the bed but just didn't put it on, and you got pulled over I wonder if the cop would let you go with a warning or what ever if you just slapped the full door on.

no your impression is wrong, and if the law sees it different, retitle the truck.

you do not have to have doors. you do have to have mirrors.

motorcycles dont have doors.

convertables dont have tops.

the key here is .... you get it or you dont. a majority of the states and police actually do get it. and wont fawk with you in any case.

though i have had problems, they were not long lasting.

The thing I don't get is, motorycles don't have doors from the factory, therefore they can't give you a ticket for not having them, convertables have a top from the factry, but are designed to be removed/ folded down, just like Jeep doors.

Where as Ranger doors are there, but are not designed from the factory to come off.

So it is alittle different.

And, I realize that most cops will understand what you are doing and not give you a bad time about it.

hmmm.

is it different? the motorcycle thing.

as a safety issue...which this will be on a pull over, how is it different.

the bike should be outlawed then if you have to have a door on any vehicle. which you dont federally up to 95 and there are potential issues from there, i have been to court and this was one of the tickets in the past. it was written as defective equipment and it was tossed. but i get pulled and wrote alot with load issues...so, i am used to dealing with the law in certain issues.

in this case you have to point by point past a certain date where door bars were mandated. the door bars are a structural part of the design, and not having the door is where the facytory issue you mention is actually valid.

in the case of my gen one and the majority of trucks this does not apply, and can be fixed on a retitle regardless. just like the engine/axle swaps can be remedied.

Hmm, I never knew about the '95 law thing.

Just curius, what exactly is a retitle? Does it just basicly respecify what the truck is? You are not talking about making it an ORV are you, where it would only be legal on trails, not the road?

no. slavage title, purpose built title, experimental, assembled ect.

you have to check, push and go with what will facillitate your goals. many options. it is a horrendous pia but worth it if your catching hell.

THE PROBLEM...is insuring it once done. the system is somewhat self regulating in that regard. cant put it on the road if you cant find someone to insure it right? or if it is cost prohibitive:shok:

the government purposely leaves gaping loopholes for those wise enough to use them.:icon_cheers:

Hmm, I never knew you could title something as anything other than a salvage, or a regular title, if that's what you want to call it.

acouple years back, me and a buddie were comein back from evans and got pulled over in his XJ for not haveing doors. we got in to it with the black diamond cop so he pulled out his tape and the lip was over 3'' and he had to let us go. but he checked the rig out very well be for we were on our way. so i really dont see what the big deal is as long as nothing is flyin out of the rig and you have your belt on.

I was AT the Jeffco sheriff's station last week with the truck, and was not told anything about having no doors, and no side mirrors. So I'd say yer in the clear man.

And when I pulled the fuse, I lost my radio as well. So I put it back in, and pulled the light. There is no dinger in the '87.

If you want, I can check my '92 fuse panel when I get home though, and tell you which fuse it is.

i umplugged the switch, i got pulled over and he said some other ppl on the force or other areas will pul you over, he didnt give me a warning just said i should put them on. it was nice that he nicely told me some will give me a ticket just cuz they can. i tossed them back on.....it aint worth the bs for a ticket. half doors soon:headbang:

i plan to run around doorless around here, but the truck will be titled as a custom built vehicle, which in the state of NJ only has to pass inspection for brakes and lights and other standard safety issues
