I have a question about a donor engine I found for my 1998 explorer 4.0. I decided to do the 5.0 swap and found a guy I work with who will trade me his 5.0 complete with all the goodies for one of my parts bronco iis. My question is will my 98 explorer passive anti theft system interfere with the motor that's from a 92? I will have to ask him what 92 it came out of but all I got during our first conversation was just 92. I read a lot about swapping from pats to pats but I cant seem to find any info from a pats to non pats motor. Any insight or maybe links to good information would be greatly appreciated.

PATS runs through the ECU, not the motor. You could swap in with a compatible non-PATS ECU/wiring or carb it. Otherwise its a full wiring swap (dash, column, underhood) to keep all the PATS system. I've swapped 4.0L's on rangers and gotten around PATS with a different ecu, but there's no other around way it.

Good Luck!

Thanks. My only concern was if pats was integrated into more then just the ecu, Like the ignition. Normally I don't work on trucks that have the new anti-theft lol. So its good to know that the pats shouldn't be an issue.

I found out that the motor and transmission will be out of a 92 ford f150 with 2 wheel drive so the ecu shouldn't have pats on it. The trick will be making all the gauges and 4x4 work. The 4x4 shouldnt be to hard just change the tail housing and use a 92 f150 transfer case. As for the gauges with the speed sensor being in the stock transmission is another story.
