hey guys i need a new rear driveshaft for my 88' 4wd extended cab ranger that has a 6" lift and i wanted to swap in a 98+ one piece shaft..ive went to a bunch of junkyards and it seems all the one piece shafts i see have a slip yoke where it goes into the transfer case..the problem is on my 88' it appears it just bolts to the case with a u-joint..if im understanding right i need to have a slip yoke somewhere in the DS right? if you guys could give me a little insight on this that would be great thanks. the truck is a 5-speed btw thanks.

Rangers never used a slip-yoke on the rear of the transfer case (if it had a slip-yoke, it was from a 2WD).

ok, so the one piece shaft i want wont have any slip yoke in it anywhere? what will happen when i flex the truck wont it bind without one?

It'll have a slip joint with a boot over it but will have bolt flanges on both ends.

i picked up a one piece aluminum shaft from a 2001 ranger today for my 88' and the only thing is the flange on the transfer case is not big enough nor the right bolt pattern..the rear bolts up fine since i swapped in an 8.8. so for the front the easiest thing would be to get the flange from a 98+ ranger and swap it out at the transfer case right? are the splines on the flanges the same from those years to mine?

that is what i did. put the flange on instead of........

the conversion U joint. u-joint Spicer Part Number 5-134x.

i dont like doing the u-joint conversion as you never know...where as replacing the flange is straightforeward. but this is my personal opinion.

If you're gonna do the flange, get one for a 2001 to make sure it fits. That's right around the year they changed the bolt pattern. I have a 98 one-piece in my 97 and it bolted right up. I wanna say that 2001 was the first year for the bigger flange but it may have been 2000. Not sure on that one.

the spicer conversion joint dosent work since it is not a 1210 to 1330 joint..im gonna look for a flange tomarrow at the junkyard.

I hate using "conversion joints for a more practical reason.... when you need another one.... Which one was it?

Not that that would be a personal issue for me... I carry a spare.

but it's especially "nice" to only need ONE spare for my rear driveshaft because they are both the same...
