I just recently bought an 8.8 axle for my Ranger and was wondering if someone could tell me if it's a 28 or 31 splined axle.

I'm considering buying a traction device for it and this info would help.....lol

WOW!

Quick response! Thanks. Actually, it came out of a 97 Ranger and has a L/S installed in it with an aftermarket diff cover. A MAC one.

It just seems like this axle won't let me go as fast as my 7.5 did. They both have 4.56 gearing and the same size tires are being run, but I just can't seem to drop it in fourth and cook like I used to with my open 7.5, that's why I'm looking for another traction option.

What could cause that? Limited slip worn out? What's a test for that? Thanks

Nevermind, I just searched online and found a test for the limited slip. It seems like mine's working the way it should.

I think this axle has a lot more traction than my old open 7.5 did so the engine's working harder to keep the same speed? Something like that?

Thanks

28 spline.
L/S vs. open shouldn't matter at speed.

Did you verify that it has 4.56?

you will have more rotational weight with the 8.8 which has a direct effect on acceleration. this however should be minimal and difficult to notice. I witnessed a very very slight loss of freeway acceleration after switching to an explorer 8.8. if it seems more significant you could try pulling the diff cover and counting the teeth to verify your gear ratio.
