Question about Mazda M50D-R1 in 89 ranger

I have bought a 1989 ranger 5 speed with the Mazda M50D-R1 I do not have reverse or 5th. I looked at the shifter bushings and they are pretty much gone can that be causing my no reverse/5th like I was told my a non mechanic friend. it has a 2.9 motor

NO. The bushings can't cause that, but a failed rail/fork assembly can.

Get ready to pull the trans.

That's what I thought but I was hoping to not have to take it out.
