Ok so I've had my truck for a couple years now and one of the most aggravating things about it is my top speed. I'm not sure where to begin with any of this but I've had several people tell me I need to swap out the diff. I do alot of interstate driving and the traffic usually runs around 80mph. At 80mph my engine is screaming. What do I do?

An increase in tire size will help too. Factory Tire size should be on the door sticker. Compare that to what is actually on the truck.

Check your door tag again and run the axle code against the chart in the Tech Library. We will have to know what it has to know what you will have to do.

A higher(lower numerical) rear end ratio will reduce the cruise RPMs but will also reduce the power. If you live in flat country the higher gears should improve gas mileage, in hilly areas like New England you'll do a lot of downshifting.

Thanks I'll have to check that when I get off of work and I'll get back to you. I'm not in a huge rush over this but at the same time I don't know the complete history of the truck and it worries me running those kinds of rpms.

It's a lot better to rev an engine than it is to lug it down. Another thing I thought of, you said you don't have a tach and are going by the noise it makes, have you checked to make sure your fan clutch isn't seized up? We had a bunch of problems with fan clutches in the 90's.

All the above, plus, tell us more about the truck. What body style? (Single cab? Extended cab? Long or short bed?) What engine? 2.3l, 2.5l, 3.0l, 2.9l, 4.0l, etc? Automatic or standard transmission? 4x4 or Rwd?
