My credo
I need more sleep.
So, I've heard Ford was talking about putting a turbo diesel in a F-150, but they never went through with it. Honestly I think it wouldn't be a bad idea, I think it would get much better gas mileage and have more power. I also read rumors on Ford buying Cummins, so, if it's true, maybe the F-150 might get a Cummins sometime. I honestly think they should bring back the Ranger with diesel, I know they did it back in the 80's, and I read they got really good gas mileage. I think it would be worth a shot.

Eh. I dont know if I would buy an F150 with a 6 cylinder diesel or not. I also dont think it would have as much power as you think it would. As for the Ranger Diesels....they had like 98 horsepower, definitely not powerhouses.

The only benefit of a diesel would really be a slight increase in fuel mileage.

I just dont see it gaining enough of the market share for them to spend the money to engineer it. Kind of like how they no longer put manual transmissions in trucks.

I'm not sure about the Ford Atlas, I read it's going to have a 6 speed manual, and either a 3.5l eco boost engine or a 2.2l turbo diesel one. Maybe in the distant future there will be an engine with power and good gas mileage.

True. I think they may bring back the manual eventually because they are slowly making a come back from people that prefer to drive them. Although you are hard pressed to find someone under the age of 21, I would even go on a limb and say 25 that knows how to drive a manual these days. Get into the city and the number drops even further. Personally I think it should become a part of drivers training again, thats for a different thread though haha

I wanted a manual originally, but I couldn't find one. I love to drive manual because I feel like I have more control over what I'm doing. Someday I plan on doing a swap, but that's years away.

1st... Ford doesn't own Cummins (that was an old rumor), Ford isn't buying Cummins (even if they did, they have an contract with Dodge to only sell to them for light duty trucks that was renewed recently. That's why you can get a cummins in a f-650 and bigger, but not in a f250-550.)

2nd... Dodge is putting a smaller diesel in their 1500 as of mid 2014. You know Ford and Chevy will watch this very closely. If it turns out to be hit, my guess would be that they will have diesel 1/2 tons shortly after. ( Ford and Chevy already did the research a few years ago, but scrapped the idea when the economy tanked. Ford even had diesel test mules up and running.)

3rd... If they build it, I'll buy one.

There are kits you can buy to put a late model Cummins in a Ford and use the stock drivetrain. Now on top of that you can put any of the electronic upgrades such as Bullydog, and easily get 1100HP. Yes, it's expensive but you'd spend at least that much money getting anywhere close to that with a gas motor.

Ford did own controlling interest in Cummins. Yes, they had a contract with Chrysler/Dodge...Ford sold most of their 'interest' and that sale along with others at the right time is one of the reasons Ford survived the current economic crisis.

Chevy has a small diesel in the Cruz now.

Makes you wonder what is next?

I wonder how well fords new 5 cly diesel would do in an f150.

It not a new diesel. It's been in South America and Europe for years.

From what I have seen its a proven engine

What I want is a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck, any brand, that runs on hydrogen or natural gas...anything but dinosaur piss. Wish I could find a complete kit to convert a classic F150, or any vehicle for that matter, to strictly electric just for commuting and around town driving. The direct drive electrics have wicked torque...Google "electric VW" or "electric beetle" or "electric pickup" for some interesting reading.
Apparently, dropping a 4-cyl. diesel, turbocharged, into a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck is fairly straightforward...if you want to smell like a refinery as you drive around. The early diesels worked okay, but they were weak sisters cause they weren't geared right and they were naturally aspirated...that means no turbo or superchargers for you young'uns, and we all remember how much fun carburetors and early injection were, right?
