is the push button 4x4 that bad -any mods or upgrades other than new xfercase?

Push buttons can be bad. I've heard of them gettin soaked in water and making it so you are stuck in 2wd. Don't take it from me though, I'm still learnin. I'm gonna convert mine to manual eventually more because I like everything manual. I don't trust electronics. I have all of the parts but need to find the time.

In the end, it's still mechanical. The only difference is in how the gears are meshed. Pushbutton uses an electric motor to engage the gears. Is electric less reliable? In my opinion, yes, but I have never had that type of failure on any of my rigs.

It's less reliable than a lever, yes. It's not a terrible system once a couple changes are made, though. The motor case is usually clocked too far clockwise by a couple degrees and the stop bushing gets crushed. Make a new bushing from a zip-tie, rubber tube, anything more rugged than the plastic that was there, and clock it, and it will work great. Also, seal it up good when you're done and water won't affect it. Mine has no issues, and will engage with my headlights under water.

Sounds reasonable-what parts other than the case (and BTW which case) and boot are needed and is it straight bolt in? and regarding the clocking, is that covered anywhere on here ?

You don't need a case and boot. You use the existing parts, it makes sense when you take it apart. There is a round stop built into the case with a plastic bushing on it that shatters. Replace the round bushing with a section of rubber hose, a zip-tie, anything handy and rugged that won't get crushed. When you put the case back together, at least on older 1354E's, the cover for the case can be clocked counter-clockwise just a wee bit and the motor won't turn so far that it crushes your new bushing. The electrical contacts that the motor uses to determine position are anchored by the cover, so rotating it rotates where the motor "thinks" that it is. Yes, there is a write-up in the tech library on a newer motor.
