Transmission
Manual
I'm looking at buying an 86 ranger with push button 4x4 to replace my current non-running ranger that has manual 4x4. Both rangers are 2.9L V6's with manual trans and 4x4. The push button ranger has problems with the transmission and electric t-case. Not sure what transmission it has.

Rather than troubleshooting the push button t-case and trans I was thinking to swap my old manual t-case and trans in. (Plus I'd rather have manual 4x4 than problematic push button.)

I was wondering if anybody has an idea of what would need to be done to complete this swap and what kind of preventative maintenance I can do before reinstalling.

I assume i'll need to change the floor plates. I also plan to do the 4.0 clutch and starter upgrade while its out. I know my trans is an FM145, if the other trans is the Toyo Koygo will I need to modify drive shaft lengths?

Any advice and info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

transfer cases are the same dimensions however some have a different flange for the front driveshaft, if they are the same then you just have to make sure your transmission has the mounting holes for the transfercase shifter. Look at the two bosses just down from the shifter

that is where the t case shifter mounts too, honestly if it all matches cutting the carpet is the hardest part.

I thought cutting the floor was harder. A good box cutter took care of the carpet. I kept breaking the Dremel discs on the floor.

OP shouldn't have to cut the floor if the plate from the manual truck is available. Carpet, yes.

I am going to be doing this after hunting season. I have the manual shift t-case, shifter, and boot from a JY truck. The problem is, the donor truck was auto tranny, manual t case. My B2 is the opposite, manual tranny, auto t-case. Not sure how to handle cutting the floor and making the shifter boots work. Any suggestions?

Set the new bezel on the floor over your transmission shifter, get the passenger side screws in and then trace it with a sharpie. Pull it back off and cut the carpet inside the line. Then set the bezel back on, trace the inside of the t-case shifter onto the floor, and then cut the floor plate on the line.
