Push Button 4x4. No Low Range.

its the transfer case control module, i had the same problem. you can run a self test on the module ( located behind the drivers door in the side panel) turn key to the on position and push the button on the right side of the module. it should flash once every second, if so its good to go. if it stays lit or doesnt light at all, theres a malfunction. you can dig one out of a B2, an explorer up to 94 or a ranger from of the same years. i got one for like $11 at pinknpull.

in explorers its in the trunk on the left side. I cant remember where they are on rangers, hope this helps

It should be a lil red light too right?

There is also a locator pin that rotates with the motor gearing that sets the positioning contacts correctly for the computer to know it's in the right position. It originally has a rubber bushing on it that acts as a bump stop. Often this rubber bushing develops flat spots, or breaks down altogether, and this causes the contacts to be out of position. The computer then doesn't know what position it's in so does nothing. I saw a write-up somewhere about it, but can't seem to find it quickly.
Anyway, I've had to replace this rubber bushing on two different shift motors. Just a simple piece of rubber hose works fine. You might take a look at that.

yeah its just a little red bulb right next to the test button. its a good way to know for sure if you need a tccm or a shift motor.

Did we ever answer your question? Any success in fixing yours?
Once I posted this thread I got in my Bronco and everything was working perfectly. But recently it has been acting up again, I'm just going to tear into it and clean it thoroughly. Thanks for all the great info!

You talking about the T-Case Shift motor that your gonna tear into?

Well was gonna do the same thing this weekend, but now heard some "clunking" noises from my T-case today. But let me know how it goes with the T-Case Shift motor.

Yeah, I did the check tonight and the light stayed on. So I'm guessing check the shift motor first?

if the light stays on the something is wrong with the transfer case control module. mine would stay lit and would only go into 4hi, but no 4lo. i got one from pinknpull for $11 and its worked great ever since. but i guess you could put 12v to the shift motor and see if its workin right. or take some the great advice from all the other guys on here haha. let us know what gets it working!

Honestly the hardest part is splicing the brown wire that comes out of the case. Just follow the directions in the Chilton manual, they at least got that one right....

you dont have to splice anything on the control module. if you look behind your driver seat theres a little compartment, theres a black box in there ( the control module) two ( i believe 8mm) nuts, and a wiring harness. its litterally a 5 minute job to take the old one out and put the new one in. itll take you longer to go to the junkyard and pull one out of an exploder
(see earlier post for explorer tccm location). as always, its interchangable with rangers and explorers up to 94/95, whenever explorers were remodeled.

i actually got 2 (just in case) at the local pick n pull and changed it in the parking lot just to make sure. did it on my lunch break and still had time to get some wendys haha
