I have a 1996 Ranger with 4.0. Got the P1443 error code and found the threads about that here. The Purge Flow Sensor was definately shorted so I replaced that with a new motorcraft part and also replaced some of the vacuum line that looked bad. Reset code and drove a while and the code came back. Going to check the solenoid next but is there any way to know if the cannister or the PCM is bad?

Thanks

Found the Problem

So the sensor was bad and also found a bad solenoid. If I would have read the posts here a little closer it would have helped. If anyone has this problem, take the sensor off and check it with an ohm meter. Very easy to do and mine showed a complete short between any combination of the 3 pins. Now, before you run to the parts store (like I did) take the solenoid off and hook 12 volts to it (watch polarity). You should hear it click and open the vavle in the fitting on top. If not, buy it too. As someone posted it might be better to get the kit that has both of these and the vacuum lines to. Ford couldn't find the part number for that so I wasted a second trip and the time it took me to drive around after resetting and read the codes again.

Hope this helps someone...

can you post a picture of this? I had this code come on a few weeks ago, but then it cleared itself, came on a day later and then cleared itself. its now been off for like a week or two. truck runs fine but I dont wanna throw parts at it if its just a CEL.

I ran into this problem back in January or so. The solenoid was dead. Swapped it out and problem gone. The sensor was fine.
