I just replace the old PS pump in my 92 4.0 as it was making the loud whining sound these are known for -- especially when under load.

I flushed all the old fluid out of the system and topped it up with Mercon V ATF/PS fluid (Motorcraft variety). After start up, I was surprised to hear the pump still make that whining sound though not as loud.

I was thinking the new pump should be completely quiet. Am I correct or should I run something else in the pump other than Mercon V to quiet it down?

pump

there is a procedure for bleeding the air out witch you didnt do, there not bolt on and go, check your manual for this it maybe damaged,

Also, the C3 pump will never be silent. Most of them come with a big orange tag telling you that there is roughly a 500 mile break-in after which it should get quieter, but it will never be silent.

Properly bleed it and check all fittings for leaks. Air is smaller than merc v so its possible that air is getfing in but no fluid is coming out. Just hit them with a tubing wrench.

Look up vacuum bleeding. It works. A pint of Lucas for automatic transmissions helps too.

I gave the truck a quick run around the block and the noise seems to have gone away. Perhaps there were still a few air bubbles trapped in the system somewhere but they seem to have risen to the resevoir. I did not the fluid level was down slightly so I topped it up again.

Vac bleeding is great if you have the stuff. Running the wheel lock to lock 25 times with the engine running will work just as well.

I got a cap from the bone yard and put two nipples on a lid for a glass jar. Run a vacuum line from the cap to the jar and then to manifold vacuum. If any fluid gets pulled into the jar it wont go in the engine. Work it from stop to stop a bunch of times while pulling it into a vac it should quiet down. You can leave the kit on for a day or so just keep an eye on the fluid level when hot.
