Project "ForD55" - 4D55 Turbo Diesel - 94 Ranger 4x4

I HAVE THE SAME ENGINE AND THE WATER OUTLET IS DIFFERENT FROM THE 4D55T CAME IN RANGER OR MITSUBISHI/DODGE I REMOVE THE ENGINE FROM A MITSUBISHI TRUCK

LOOK THE SHAPE OF THE WATER OUTLET I AM IN DOUBT NOW IS OUTLET OR INLET?

P.S AND BY THE WAY PRETTY GOOD PROJECT,AND I REGRET I SOLD MY 93 RANGER 2.3 EXTENDED CAB BECAUSE THAT WAS MY GOAL PUT THE 4D55T

It's exactly the same engine, the only differences are externally and they are small. The top is the outlet, and the one on the side by the water pump is the inlet. Actually there was a couple of times that having the mitsubishi parts on my engine would have made my swap easier so you have that to be thankful for. Some of the parts you see on the truck have been fabricated from other cars (example: the intercooler is off an audi) I plan on posting more videos at some point, It will show more of the truck. They are awesome engines!

Nice build! Great info here man thanks! You just answered all my transmission concerns. Love the innercooler idea, was just eyeballing under the hood of mine coming up with some ideas myself.

Interesting location for the intercooler. What did that unit come out of? Looks like its about the same size as the one I used but that's a much simpler setup. The only catch would be not being able to mount an AC compressor. I'd still like to do that with ours some day.

.....some day...

I may have asked this before, but what size exhaust pipe did you use?

Are you running stock fuel settings?

Looks like the little beast has plenty of get up!

Intercooler is off an AUDI, has a motorcycle pull fan wired on a thermostatic switch. It moves a ton of air. Location wasn't my first choice, but it fit nicely and works well. Exhaust is a free flowing 2.5" and I've done a little playing with the fuel / timing. When I had the injector pump off, I set and calibrated everything to the book using the dial indicator on the pump. Since then, I've advanced it slightly and turned the fuel up just a hair (1/2 turn?) not sure exactly. Looking at the PYRO I could give it more fuel, it runs well within it's safe limits, I've chosen to just leave it where it is for now. I'm happy with it's power / economy. I might do a little tinkering, only because it's fun and everything is so accessible.

What alternator did you end up using? I'm really wanting too upgrade mine on my 86 diesel because I am wanting to install an electric fan, off road lights (LED so not much amp draw) and maybe a winch one day. I have installed two 750 CCA batteries and want an alternator that is more than the factory 65 amps.

I'm sure you're finding out with the diesel you didn't need those 373 gears, the 327's would have given you better mpg. Nice swap though, great job :icon_thumby:

sent a pm, then thought to add in for others.

Is that a new water pump early on in your build? looks pretty shiny. Have you needed to replace anything else? I've heard two schools on the web; parts are hard to find, and, all parts are available. What do you think Oh2ranger?

if people don't know, the bosch ve pump is near identical on a vw 1.6/1.6td/1.9td. I have traded for a diesel ranger, and have yet to have it in front of me to really look and compare with my 1.9td (swapped into an 82 rabbit).

How to make your (turbo diesel) a faster car. http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=579.0
it's basically turn the fuel up, then rein it in with another screw back down to normal (warmed up) idle.

what sort of tuning process are you doing Oh2Ranger?

there's also a 'governor mod' in one of the diy/faq sections somewhere, I could find.

here's a french picto how to for the 4d55 IP and turbo. the pics are pretty obvious, I could translate if someone asked...

Can't wait to have my hands on my new truck!!

Alternator is off of a Taurus, it's a 130 AMP alternator. Fit well.

Jessay,
Thanks for all the questions, I will try to answer them and help you or anyone else out. I have replaced quite a bit while I had the motor out, I kept myself a list on Microsoft Word to keep track of everything, but yes I did replace the water pump while it was out. I bought one that was actually listed for the Mitsubishi Mighty Max, they are identical, however the price is much greater for the Ford.

I appreciate you sending me the links that you have found. The more the better I guess. I haven't had any issue finding parts. I think that parts are a little more "frustrating" to find.. at least in comparison to what else you might drive, but if you NEED something, you can still get it. Is there anything in particular you are looking for?

As far as tuning, I've played with advancing the pump (rotating) and fuel screw. I have a EGT gauge, and I'm conservative in my nature so I'm pretty careful about messing with things. I have found that there is a lot to tune, or a lot you can tune, to suite your needs. (turn the truck up for power/smoke/..etc or tune it down for MPG)

I kinda go back and forth on myself for regearing. 3.27s would have been nice, especially since I now know that I can tune and really "wake up the motor" 3.73's dont hurt much and I can compensate the other way by turning down the fuel screw. It's milage is impressive. Other reason I don't kick myself too hard is that the axles in the truck had 230,000 miles, and judging by the rest of the truck, they weren't easy miles. The axles (front and rear) that I put in had about 120,000 on them.

Do you remember what year/motor the alternator is for? I looked at various years and motors and there was quite a few different ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read a lot of articles about the 2g to 3g alternator swap and the most common ones seem to be the mid 90's Taurus and the sn95 mustangs.

I want to say it's off a 94 but I don't remember exactly. I think there was 2 different styles and they mounted very differently. The one I got off the shelf at Auto-zone was a perfect fit, the only things I had to do was :

1) Slightly drill the hole in the alternator for the long bolt that the alternator pivots on
2) Get a bolt with a lock washer and nut ( the alternator from the Taurus doesn't have threads in the alternator itself. )

It will all make sense if you do it, you won't have any issues looking at it when you are holding it against the truck. The 3G alternator is a huge upgrade for your electrical system and is definitely worth doing. It's very easy to do, and your truck will thank you!

What do you think of the 4D56T from the mitsu Montero? Is this a mechanical motor? Found a motor, auto trans and tcase on eBay for 1900. Thinking about doing this swap in one of my rangers...

i just seen one of those that was hopped up a bit. dude was filling up across from me and wondering if i had a 55 because it was a old school ranger.

:shok:

i was nice though.....i simply said....does it sound like a 4 cylinder??

after looking through the fenderwell on the passenger side he laughed and said,

" i see, the old 80's 6.2 chevy frame with a ranger body trick"

:icon_surprised:

then i said.....yes.....its a suburban with a ranger body.:icon_twisted:

he said he had some injector mod and pump work. claimed 120 hp.

it was a jdm engine from a sportero or spectero or sparrow..? i know what a pajero is....didnt realize there were so many models.. but it was a 56t, it was intercooled etc. said he only paid 1300 for it about 5-6 years ago. it looked like it moved out pretty good when he left....looked faster then my truck. had georgia plates on it. he said theres a common rail version that can make 200 plus hp and 300 plus tq. thats impressive.

said it gets 18-24 town and about 29 mpg about 70 mph which seems low to me for a manual trans..it had round headlights so i assume it was an 80's vehicle. it originally had the ranger 4d55 type engine in it so i would have to think it was 80's.

i rarely see them, and have to admit they are cool looking.

i hope i find a setup for that price, that would go in the b2 in a heartbeat.

The 4D56 does have a common rail version, I'm not sure of the numbers, but I do know it's impressive. I don't think it was ever offered in anything over here. The engines are still in production, and they have stood their ground with direct injected models and newer technology over the years.

The 4D56 (not common rail) and the 4d55 are near identical, everything can be swapped between the two. The 56 just holds upgraded parts (ie. better flowing head, intercooler.. etc) Basicly, if anything were to fail on my engine, I would swap a 56 part in its place.

4D55/4D56 are all mechanical, one wire to run.

Those MPG numbers do seem low. I think those Monteros/Raiders/Pajeros had really low gears, 4.+. Maybe that is why he isn't getting what we would expect a small diesel like this to get. I don't think I ever filled below 30.. ever. I've seen close to 40. I do imagine having the injectors and pump rebuilt do have a bit to do with that though.
