ok figured i'd go ahead and start a build thread for my bronco2

first post is kinda long to get all the starter info out, others will be less winded :icon_cheers: ...

Vehicle Info: 1987 Ford BroncoII XLT 2.9, electronic 4wd, 5spd

Current Condition: SH*TTY straight body only one bad rust spot it looks like, maybe one dent, paint is ok, interior is shot!!!

History: Purchased For $450 2 weeks ago from a guy that said it needed was a clutch, and PW don't work, towed it home(with a braided steel dog cable, do no try that at home lol)

Story: He got it started and it ran, idled ok, engine bay was COVERED in oil buildup, checked the dipstick was black but normal oil viscosity not watery or milky, had a miss but nothing that majorly worried me, i gave myself the 2cent tour and gave him the money....

Well i got it home and decided to give it a good "check up" to find overall condition as i didn't do much at purchase that's when it got interesting
I had already planned on replacing the valve cover gaskets since they were obviously the major source of the leaking, so i removed the upper intake and what i found was that it had very oily charred black interior of the chambers, removed one valve cover and (sigh) i seen what i thought was a head packed with axle grease it looked so thick and was built up on EVERYTHING!
removed the other to find the same(bigger sigh)

To Do List:
Engine: 4.0 swap from explorer
Transmission: undecided (any input appreciated on this)
Transfer case:swap to manual T-case, and manual hubs
Suspension: SAS thinking 70's ford w DANA 44's
Lift: plans for now is around 6"
Gears: undecided (any input appreciated on this)
Tires: 33's
Wheels: clean up current chrome bullet holes i like them
Exterior: Roof mount "basket" for gear, maybe a cowl hood
interior: new bucket seats Front and rear, Rhino line Floor do something custom with Dash and door panels,

well im sure there will be things change alot as time goes as it normally does but this is a starting point,

PICS!

Why put time and money into rebuilding that 2.9L when you going to swap in a 4.0L?.. if you can find a 4.0L i would just put that in instead of the 2,9L will save you both time and money as its a straight swap pretty much.. did the same thing in my broncoII

Dont forget to do the rear end either 8.8 or ford 9"

2.9l is fine!

I'm currently rebuilding my 2.9l and its got enough power for a daily driver, weekend weeler. Gears are everything. What kind of wheeling do you plan to do? Are you going to stay street legal or make a full time toy? Just a few questions to keep in mind before you dump a bunch of money into parts you'll just end up replacing. I'm excited to hear another ford is saved from the scrap yard and I can't wait to see the build picks.

ok so after 3 solid hours of downloading13 pics to photobucket (slow ass internet)

i give you my disturbing pictures,

didn't get any pics of the removal process the camera was in a different state with my wife...

Updated first post with pics...:icon_thumby:

And i am starting to consider just finding a good 4.0 and going ahead with the swap, i just need to find one for cheap cause i don't want to put much money into it till after winter i have a 97 explorer eddie bower 4x4 in my driveway but its the wife's so i cant take it (YET)

I would look for a cheap explorer, when i did the swap in my b2 i got a 93 explorer with a good running 4L for $300 and swapped it in along with the rear 8.8 and the front d35 was wheeling on 33's no problem. The power from the 4L is way better then the 2.9L (mine was gutless) lol

The explorer was rusted out from sitting and need a inspection as it was from out of province. No way it would pass so i got it cheap

I have updated my first post have altered my plans, no longer plan on fixing the 2.9, may sell the motor whole or parts, have everything, pm if interested

anywho I have decided to just go ahead with the full build and not waste time just getting it ready for winter, I can throw chains on the chevy and go anywhere anyways just a P.I.T.A.

time to start collecting parts!
