Problems with my swap!

Im getting very agitated with this swap and need my truck back on the road.
I have a 89 ranger 5speed 2.9l, that I just swapped a 4.0l into. I bought a 90 ranger automatic 4.0l as my donor truck for the swap. got the engine in and every thing hooked up that I know of. I took the engine wiring harness from the donor truck and hooked it all up. But kept my wiring harness in the dash of the 89. Went to the junkyard and got a 4.0 computer from a 94 manual ranger.
Now for my problems.
I have no brake lights, running lights or tag lights.
The gas gauge doesn't work.
Oil pressure gauge doesn't work.
My blinker indicator lights do not work nor do they make the clicking noise. And the right blinker indicator light stays on after the truck is cut off and key is out, and gets brighter when I hit my brake peddle.
And on top of all of that I cant crank the truck with turning the key. it will only crank when I jump the solenoid with a screw driver from the fender or the solenoid on the starter.

I have read some threads about the pins on the wiring harness not being the same for the 89 and 90 but I don't know which ones need to be messed with if any at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I need my truck asap! its been 3 weeks of me trying to make this swap happen. thanks Glenn

your sure the tail light harness is hooked up?

did you compare the pinouts?

Yes tail light harness is hooked up. checked power with my meter. im only getting .05 volts to the engine harness plug where the light harness hooks up.

ahh

i see the 89-90 thing.....the feeds are different those few years 88-89-90-91

make sure the fuse for yours is good....its 1 for the 89....feeds from 4 on the 90....

i assume theres power in full from the black and orange main feed...might need to clean it up. it gets corroded and damaged sometimes when swapping the harness.

i always pin for pin these to make sure they are correct.

I have checked all fuses. Under the dash and at the power block under hood.

And when you say pin for pin. What do you mean?

at the firewall. where you pulled one and replaced with the other.

you need to make sure its pin for pin from the original.

its the reason i prefer to stand alone harneses...that way you just leave the original stuff in place and just power the eec for the 4.0 from that system. it can be messy in the sense you stack the pdb, but its worth it if you take the time to pare it down to essentials. use the original oil pressure and temp senders etc.

Sorry ive been busy with work and what not.

But your saying I need to make sure the wires going to the pins are the same or atleast powering what there supposed to be powering?

And if they are not the same do I need to cut and splice them together though the fire wall and connect the harness wires that way?

Im fine with my truck not cranking with key and oil pressure. I can fix those problems with running a switch to inside the cab for cranking. And I can buy a aftermarket gauge for oil pressure. Im really just worried about lights.

Okay, so I pulled the wiring harness that goes to the tail lights etc. And plugged it in to the engine harness to check if I would have lights. so far I HAVE brake lights! Now I gotta make sure I have other lights and can use the harness.

Ok good news. I have the majority of my electrical issues figured out. I used the wiring from my donor truck (the 90) to fix my brake light, tag light blinker problem. they work like they should.

And used my original (89) wiring for the oil pressure. And it works like it should.

But I did find another problem I need help with. When I rev the truck it works fine till I get to exactly 3000rpm and it acts like its not getting fuel or something. It starts to bog down or flat line. But if I hit the gas hard I can get passed it and it does fine. Only bogs when I rev it at a slow normal speed.

Thinking it might be a difference in the fuel pressures I changed out the 89 pump with the 90 pump but no change. I also unplugged the mass air flow sensor but again no change. The truck also smells like its running rich through the smell of the exhaust. I also unplugged the 02sensor and still no change. I did have to mess with the idle screw near the butterfly on the intake to get it to idle properly when I first cranked the truck after the swap. It was to low and kept wanting to cut off. keep in mind the motor came out of an automatic truck. I think there might be some idle differences from the manual motors and the autos but not 100% sure. Any help would be great thanks!

I see one potential problem. '90 engine and harness with '94 ECU. The logic is probably a little off.. I wonder if that '94 had the newer style injectors and the Cam Position Sensor?

theres all kinds of differences with these. mid year...sometimes 3 times in a year, but mid changes almost every year as far as tuning etc.

usually when you swap a 4.0....you need to do it complete from one system....i have only went forward with a few swaps with mismatched parts and it was specifically because of whom the people i was performing the task for.

93 to 89 has sefi changes from batch fire etc...though i dont remember most of the details.

so you need to make sure that the engine wiring for injectors matches the computers layout. a sefi can run a batch fire harness, but a batch fire pcm wont run a sefi harness....shit like that makes for some rough days if your not aware of these things.
