the other day i was driving my 1994 ranger 4x4 and all the sudden my rearend started making a clunking noise so i stopped and went backwards thinking it was the auto locking hubs and it did it going in reverse. so i went forward with my door open to listen were it was for sure coming from and it wouldnt even move and of course i was out in the woods lik 15 miles from my house and it was snowing. so we decide to tow it home so that i wouldnt reck anyhting else. but what i dont get is that when we towed it it didnt make any noise. so does that mean its in my tranny or tcase or rearend. im just lost now that it didnt make any noise when we towed it. please share your thoughts thanks

Pull the cover off your rearend, in 5 minutes you will know if it's your 8.8 or not...

but what i dont get is that when we towed it it didnt make any noise.

Well if it made no noise while you where towing it, then it's not your rear end or carrier bearing. your rear end and bearing are still turning while being tow unless you had the rear end off the ground while towing it.

? auto or manual trans

well i dug into it today and when i took the cover off there was chunks of metal in the bottom so i guess that tells me my trouble. the gears that were wrecked are like part of my locker or inside of my locker so that sucks but thats what 35" tires will do

While it's true that the carrier is still turning when being towed, it is NOT turning in the same manner. The coast-sides of the gears contact, instead of the drive sides. The pinion bearings are also not under stress and may center much more easily.

could this also be said of the carrier bearing because that is what i was thinking when i made my previous post?
