Problems with my 2.9

There have been a few threads on this sweet water.... did you ever get a stethoscope and verify where the tick is coming from exactly?

You say it runs like crap while the tick is present right?

After it begins, it increases with accleration, decreases with decceleration and is present at idle....if you let it sit for 5-10 mins, it goes away and runs great...it may take less than 30 mins, that was just a guess....I was told that it may be the map sensor or coil...what do you guys think?

The tick sounds like it is coming from the valves not the lifters......the noise when I first start the truck is the lifters I believe.

It runs horrible while the tick is present, runs great when it isn't....I was told the map sensor would creat these symptoms.....valves ticking due to starving for fuel.

Could also be a fouled up fuel injector. Would explain the loudness, and the poor running condition.

I would pull the plugs and check for a lean condition after it has been 'ticking'

If the MAP is malfunctioning, it could be causing a lean condition..and detonation could be mistaken for your 'tick'

I would unplug the MAP, let the engine run awhile, and the ECU will use it's 'default' settings. If it runs better, replace the sensor.

I took the ignition module off today and took it to the local parts store to have it tested...the test showed it was bad....I put the new one on and went on about an hour test drive....It drove great, no loud ticking noises, no loss of power! hopefully my problem is finally resolved! And it only took 2 mins to take off and 3 to put back on!

That's the first time I've heard of a dead TFI leading to any noise at all.

Usually, the engine just cuts out until it cools off.

That's.........odd

Glad to hear you got it fixed tho!

ever heard of one having issues when ambient temps are very cold (less than 15 degrees)? I get misfire symptoms when engine is cold and I also get code 14- erratic ignition pickup.

My dad was a mechanic for 32 years, had his own shop, the way he explained it was that when the ignition module goes bad it makes it misfire, and that will cause the valves to make the loud ticking noise because of lack of fuel or poor performance period...probably didn't explain it right! The injectors and spark plugs aren't in sync maybe...I don't know...he's the mechanic not me obviously!

either way congrats on getting it fixed.

I took the BII on a two hour trip yesterday.....still some ticking, but not as bad as before, and absolutley no loss of power! I think the ticking is the "normal" ticking that these engines will make....but I do believe the ignition module fixed my problem!
