I have a 96 Ranger with a 5 speed manual and a 2.3l. I just started having problems getting it into first and third gear. It seemed to happen over night. On day it was fine the next it was having trouble. Also When I put it into reverse I hear a thud. This sounds like an expensive repair and I only paid $400 for the truck.

Any clue what it could be? I love the truck and really want to keep it, but I don't want to put a lot of money into it.

1st, 3rd and reverse is an odd combination. I suspect a mainshaft bearing (the three gears mentioned are the closest to the center bearing for all three synchronizer assemblies) OR a broken shifter bushing. Is the stick floppy?

Unless you blew a stick, you need a transmission; it really doesn't matter what's wrong with it.
