So guys tonight I was driving and it seemed to be like any other time drivin around. Well, aways into my trip the speedometer started to act all funny sayin I was doin 80 when I was only doin about 45 and jumping around like crazy and then I started to hear this clunking sound and thought, oh it's probably my spare tire again...or my sway bar(because the bushings are almost gone and I left the connections to the axle loose.) Well it was neither and then I stopped at a freinds house, stayed for awhile and then decided to go home. When I started it up, I had the clurch pushed in and the shifter in nuetral, and when I put it in reverse it wouldn't go in at all and the harder I tried to jam it, the truck would move backwards. So I try first and same thime but moving forward. So I gave it a nice double clutch and a jam, and it went into gear. So while driving it shifted nice after cycle through the gears but the first cycling the gears all stuck like a mother--- and some chattered. But the more I drove the worse the clunking sound became...then I figured out it might be the tranny or transfer case and something is loose? Well it could be the clutch itself but I doubt it would "clunk" over every crack in the road:icon_confused:.

Well what do you guys think??? I would really appreciate the help and advice despite the length of my description!!!

bump...

It has an M5OD-R1 tranny and an electric shift transfer case. I would really like some help with this...I went under today and tightend all the bolts and it seems that none of the were loose. I checked the u-joints and they seem to be fine. So what is left???

does your speed still jump around? Sounds like your speedo gear is acting up. Hopefully the stiffness isn't from it breaking off and lodged in the tranny

Yeah the speed is acting all funny!!! Today I took it around the block and it was reading 45mph when I was in first gear at 3000rpm but the tranny was gliding into gear better then it ever has this time...so what would it take to replace the speed gear?

Truthfully, It was a lucky guess. Because on my T-5 5speed, there is a plastic gear on the shaft that spins and tells a sensor how fast you're going, pending you don't change the gearing in the rear end. If it got stiff and the speedo was jumping around, that told me that the speedo in the M5(if it has one to begin with) was bad.

I would ask a tranny expert and see what they say. I mean if it's showing 80 and you're doing 45, something isn't right.

O.K. yeah I was gonna ask someone on monday...but what the heel would the "clumking noise be? I just replaced all the rubber bushings with polyurethane, but I haven't gotten to the body bushings. I know it's none of the body bushings because all in all they are in decent shape. And the engine to tranny bolts are tight, the tranny to frame suport are all tight, the radius arms to frame are tight, transfer case and everything is tight and looks fine!!! I can't seem to find anything wrong underneath tht would "clunk"over every bump!!! I don't want to do a total tranny over-hall because I am gonna end up putting a 302, 5 speed tranny and 8.8 axle out of an explorer this summer so yeah, what would be the best and cheapest fix??

Let me ask you this: Where does the clunk sound like its coming from? It could be a million things. Like on mine for example:

My ranger used to have dual exhaust before it went back to its factory setup. It make a bad thump over every bump. I got out and hopped the front of the truck and the back of the truck. It came from the back of the truck. Turns out it was a loose exhaust extension from the not used left side and it was hitting the leaf spring.

Long story short: Keep looking and keep ruling out possibilities until the cause turns up.
