Problem with disengaging 4x4

I bought a 94 ranger that had the auto hubs replaced with warn manual hubs…once I lock the hubs manually I can engage the 4x4 buy using the push button on the dash (the button lights up and the 4x4 engages)…but the push button will not disengage the transfer case. The 4x4 light goes out but the transfer case remains in 4x4. I have to get out and disengage the hubs manually and back up 10 feet to disengage the 4x4. Is this normal or should I be able to shift on the fly using the 4x4 button on dash.
It's my understanding that once the warn hubs are locked I should be able to shift in and out of 4x4 on the fly. Can anyone let me know if I’m wrong about the warn manual hubs or if I have a problem…If I have a problem can anyone point me in the direction of fixing this.

thanks...

There's probably a bit of driveline bind holding the t-case in 4x4. It will eventually drop out on it's own as you drive the truck. Or you can 'coax' it out of 4WD by lightly blipping the throttle while driving in a straight line (get on the gas, then let off completely).

Totally normal.

Having all the same diameter tires will make it come out easier, as different size tires will create more driveline bind as you drive (say if you have 3/4 worn tires up front, and brand new ones out back, or having tires of different brands).

My dad backs up to make sure that his 4wd disengages but he has a manual transfercase. I'd do the same thing just to prevent stuff from happening.
