I just replaced the 4.0 in my friends truck and I am having some difficulty mating the trans to the new 4.0. The engines are both from a 91 and both were autos. The only difference is that the new engine came out of an explorer. Anyway, I can get the two together but there will still be about a 3/4'' gap between the engine and trans bellhousing, I dont know what the problem is. I start with the torque converter on the input shaft of the tranny and when the two come together I make sure the alignment pins on the tourque converter are aligned with the holes on the flex plate, when that is done thats as far as the two will go. Is there a trick to this installation madness? PLEASE HELP. THANKS :fie:

Your converter is not installed properly (it's not fully engaged in the pump). Remove the transmission and check. If you continue to install the transmission like that, your GONNA break some real expensive stuff.
