Hey Guys,
First real thread here (besides intro), and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I've been having. Just got this truck, just finished putting a new clutch kit and slave in it. That's how I found out it wasn't an fm145, cause the slave cylinder I bought for it ('87 model year) was totally different. Started looking at parts and my slave cylinder matched the '88 model year, which makes it an fm146 tranny if I'm not mistaken.
Anyway, the clutch was so bad the truck wouldn't move a bit. Now that it's back together, 1st and 3rd gear seem to be gone. Let me describe to you the issue, push clutch pedal in, shift into first, nice and smooth, good positive feeling going into gear, let clutch out, and it grinds (for you CDL drivers, sounds like trying to grab a gear when your engine revs aren't high enough yet). 3rd does the same thing. The shifter vibrates too.
Today I had it up on jack stands, put it in 1st, and pushed real hard on the shifter (forward, same direction as if I was shifting into first still), and it actually engaged the gear, wheels turned, no grinding noises...
So my question, are the gears chewed up? Is there a shifter linkage/prawl that could be out of adjustment? Anyway to test/diagnose without pulling tranny apart? 2nd, 4th, 5th, and reverse all seem to be A-OK.
I know if these gears are junk my best bet would be to just pull it and swap in a junkyard M5OD, but I'm hoping to avoid that.
Info that may be needed, 1987 Supercab 4x4 XLT Ranger, with what appears to be a 1988 FM146 tranny. Transfer case I'm unsure of, flat flanges on rear driveshaft, manual shift t-case w/ manual hubs.
Please Ranger gurus, instruct me!
