Pressing on Power Steering Pulley...???

I'm in the process of changing my Power Steering Pump and at the point of pressing on the pulley, but after getting about 3 "ribs" on, the pump rotates as I turn the nut on the installation tool (supplied w/ the pump - it's just a bolt, nut and washer). I tried holding the pulley while turning the nut, but that only got me a few more turns....

How do I keep the pump from rotating as I tighten the nut to press on the pulley???:icon_confused:

Thanks!!!

Checker sells a tool for about $30 (ouch!) that works quite well.

Just use a impact, you should be able to just hold in your hand but if not,we have used a plumpers chain tool to hold it,big oil filter tool will work also

If you have the pulley on enough to where it wont just jump off, I would think the easiest way would be to just install the PS pump on the truck. Then you could just install the belt, even though it would be a bit off for now, and use the tension from the belt to keep it from rotating while you finish tightening it.

OK cool...some good ideas!!! Wow, that tool from Checker's is WAY "beefier" than what is supplied w/ the pump, but does it have to be installed on the bench??? The way the Ranger 2.3 is designed, the pump has to be installed first, THEN the pulley pressed on afterwards...

Thanks for the suggestions... I'll reply w/ my results

You could install it on the bench if you pulled the whole Ranger PS pump bracket off the motor. I bought this tool to press the pulley onto a PS pump for my F100. But we used it over the last couple weekends to press pulleys onto my boss's Ranger 3.0 water pump also. The tool is small enough you can easily use it with a couple wrenches in the engine compartment too.

I wasn't thrilled about spending $30 to install the pulley on a $40 PS pump, but it's paid for itself now.

I'm sure you can find one for a lot less than $30 on the web, unless you need it 'yesterday' like I did.
