Okay, so everything about my ranger minus my LED dash clusters is factory original. Basic XLT package--manual locks, windows, no tilt wheel. One thing I've realized--there are 6 speakers in my truck's little cab, surrounding everything. Two in the door, and one behind each seat. And they sound amazing. So my question is, what sound packages were offered from the factory? If any? Thanks.

i have an 06 excab sport. and had 4 6x9s one in each door

According to my 1987 FSM the Premium system has a THIRD plug (eight pin) that goes to the opposite rear corner of the head unit.....therefore no plug in the head unit and no wire harness plug = no Ford factory premium sound.

FOr this plug:

Pin #2, 8......no circuit #.......not connected
Pin # 7.........circuit # 747.....at output sense (used with premium sound only)
Pin # 6.........circuit # 694.....radio ground
Pin # 5.........circuit # 484.....display back lighting
Pin # 4.........circuit # 19.......radio graphics lighting
Pin # 3.........circuit # 137.....radio power (B+)
Pin # 1.........circuit # 54.......radio memory (A+)

FYI, pin # 1 is a the end with the little little plastic tab on the outside of the connector shell.

IME (see sig and my project posts) that many (but not all) wires for 1987 and 1988 are the same color....so this should at least be a guide, but necessarily the exact wire colors for your 88.

Aye, mine is actually a 99. But your guide still may help me...I'm trying to remember the wire layout from when I put my cd player in. I know it was a lot of them, heh heh. I just know that the sound kicks ass..and if it isn't premium sound, i'd love to hear what premium sound package does sound like! :headbang:

the 6x9 is stock for my year and i think for most pioneer makes speakers that plug right in and mount to the existing brackets they dont sound bad i have all four speakers pioneers with a pioneer deck and ipod connection that runs into my glove box where it holds my ipod and i use my ipod through the deck.then ive got a kicker 10inch competition with a custom box and a z edition 1200 watt amp and it hits hard it breaks necks i wanted to go all JL audio but i didnt want to cut up my back speakers mounts

you say you have 6 speakers. one behind each seat and 2 in the doors. is that 2 in each door?

You should only have four speakers in the truck stock. One in each front door, and two in the rear.

In '99 stock radios for the Ranger included AM/FM, AM/FM/cassette, AM/FM/single CD, and AM/FM/cassette/single CD (Dual Media). The AM/FM radio had two speakers, one in each front door. All of the others have four speakers.

Yep. mine came with the AM/FM tape deck, but it definitely has 6 speakers. 2 in each door, and one behind each seat.

why would they put components in the rear doors? It's a bit redundant and only helps the poor bastards in the pull out seats.

well im just assuming the truck in his avatar is the one hes talking about. appears to be a regular cab to me. so there wouldnt be any rear doors.

ah I got confused by the 2 speakers in all the doors comment, figured he meant the fronts and the backs because who has components in one door and 6x9 two ways on the other door

and i think everyone is confusing 5x7/6x8 for 6x9. as far as i know rangers never came with them stock. they can be modified to fit.
