pre runner vs trail rig

so i know the difference, ive been around off roading my whole life, but im interested to get other peoples take.
what classifies the difference between a pre runner and a trail rig, seeing as rangers are one of the only vehicles you can do either or with.
so here's my question...

what is your interpretation of the difference between the two?
 
you can make anything a prerunner...350 e series van can be a prerunner...


prerunner is biased toward racing.....trail rig is biased toward 4wd needs...carry more gear and equip....hunt/fish etc..

equally spartan or plush interior...
 
AFAIK Prerunners usually sit high in the front so they have more suspension travel to absorb bumps. They don't actually race but "prerun" the track to make sure something hasn't happened to it (like a tree fell across it) before the actually race.

We have no offroad races here, that is just what I have picked up.

A trail rig is a tough, reliable rig that is usually rather hard to look at. Usually function over form to the highest degree.
 
Prerunners are usually made to go fast through the desert. Trail rigs usually go down slow, technical trails, which may include rock crawls and some mud.

Trail rig is more versatile in my opinion and I own both a pre runner ranger and a locked up yota. But then again I'm not running a crazy suspension on the ranger just extended beams and rads.
 
Prerunner is usually a 2wd truck built for high speed racing across rough terrian. A 4wd truck can also be a prerunner, but normally don't do to more driveline geometery to mess with. But 4wd trucks built for racing are normally classified into short course trucks.

Trail rig is preferably a 4wd truck chassis (any year, any make, any model). Being pretty does not count as most all rigs are made to be scratched and dented from the rough trails. They are more built to conquer terrian at slower speeds and go where most normal vehicles can't go. 2wd trucks can also be trail rigs and simplier to work on due to less moving parts.
 
the red Toyota is 4wd, however he said if he were to do it again he would stay 2wd
