is there a way i can get more power outa my 4.0 thats not to expensive besides exhaust work?? i mean not to expensive by under 1000 bucks or so. right around a 1000 would be okay aslong as its not motor work. i know the 2.9s they say to put 5.0 injectors in it does this work for the 4.0??
 
I know on later 4.0s that the right 4.6 injectors work. I dunno what year that starts or if 5.0 injectors interchange with the older 4.0s.
 
You are not going to get much for a $1000, but here are the options.

Tom Morana:

Offers stroker kits, camshafts, connecting rods, pistons, cylinder heads


4.0 Stroker Kits 4.0 Intake Manifold For Carburetor

K&N Filters:

Carries products including new air intake systems for some 4.0L Rangers.

Camcraft:

Offers a new camshaft for the 4.0L.

Kurtz Kustomz:

Sells a True-Rev Sport Induction Kit.

Super Six Motorsports:

Offers heads and intakes for the 4.0L engines.

Competition Cams:

Offers camshaft# 49-410-8 as an OEM replacement good for towing and all around performance. Camshaft# 49-422-8 is a more aggressive cam for 4.0's with other modifications. It is designed to improve midrange power and torque.

Thomas Knight:

Offers a kit to install an Eaton supercharger on the 4.0L Ranger.

eBay Supercharger Kit:

We found this kit on eBay to mount an Eaton supercharger on a newer SOHC 4.0 Ranger. The kit does not include the supercharger. The supercharger required is the 3rd generation m90, from the 1989 thru 1993 Ford T-Bird Supercoupe. (the inlet is oval). The manifold is all (aluminum), each port uses 2"OD aluminum 90 degree ells. There are 3-1/8" threaded pipe plugs in the manifold for sensor, water or alcohol injection, etc. The manifold will handle the weight of the M90 (without) additional support. This kit includes all component parts to install an Eaton M90, 3rd generation Supercharger on a 2002 Ford Ranger 4.0 SOHC.







Explorer Express:

Offers the X-Charger for the 4.0 SOHC Ranger.



Explorer Express X-Charger

Explorer Express also offers headers, spark plug wires, throttle bodies, and intake tube for the 4.0L OHV Ranger.

Vortec and Paxton had produced superchargers for the 4.0L engine but we can no longer find them listed.

BBK Performance:

BBK offers 66mm throttle bodies for the 4.0L OHV Ranger.

Airaid:

Offers a throttle body spacer that's said to increase low end performance and horsepower.

Pacesetter:

Pacesetter offers headers for the 4.0L OHV Ranger.

JBA:

JBA offers headers and ignition wires for the 4.0L Ranger.

Hedman Hedders:

Offers headers for the 4.0L engines.

Gibson and Dynomax:

Both offer cat-back exhaust systems for the Ranger.

Modifications:

Head Porting:

Port your upper and lower intake. The intakes don't line up diameter to diameter. Porting opens this up and allows better flow. Knife edge the intake side of the throttle body to remove the front lip. You can use a Dremel tool to grind, sand and buff this area to obtain a smooth airflow in to the engine. You can also mill down the butterfly to blend in to the shaft for a smoother air flow.

MSD - Manufactures a DIS ignition system along with wiring harnesses. Find their parts at Summit Racing.

JetChip - Makes a module to reprogram the engines computer.

O.K..........headers/exhausts would improve power so that it would be noticeable.........higher flowing injectors would reduce gas mpg's so that it would be noticeable.....a new air intake is mostly for looks which would be noticeable....all in all--it would probably take 5 years for the "improvements" to pay for themselves..... ;missingteeth;

But seriously though, not a lot of spray, just a bit every now and then in the sticky spots. And it'll be under 1000.

Or you could have a boatload of fun and crank her up, but you can only find so many cheap engines before you pass $1000.
 
Camshaft and exhaust are the best and cheapest way (if you can do the cam swap). I don't know how much a shop will charge for a cam swap. Good gearing always helps as well. But...with the price of gas...why do this?? Now that America has got used to paying more for gas again, the price of gas is not really going to drop by much.
 
I haven't gotten used to it. It still hurts.

i personally think the 4.0 is good as is... but that may be b/c i started w/ a 2.9 and got used to that
 
"Bigger" injectors are just pissing in the wind if the demand for air has not increased beyond what the stock injectors can handle.

ya i started with the 2.9 to and im am going to the 4.0 for now but i like to have as much power as i can everyone i talk to says the 4.0 will be plenty but i dont see it with haveing 33's but who knows ive never driven a 4.0
 
Save your money.

The truck is lifted with bigger than stock tires correct?

Gear the axles properly for the tire size and even go a little bit deeper if you want more get up and go.
 
"More power" almost always means more rpm to make the power, which
often means less useable torque if not less torque as well.

what people really want is more torque, particularly for low rpm.

a supercharger makes more torque

Remember the simple truth.
Torque is about how much air is moved PER CYCLE.
Power is how much air is moved per minute

Torque is about cylinder pressure & volume.
Power is about the total ammount of air moves through the engine in a given time period.

If I wanted a V8 Ranger I wouldn't even consider a 5.0 engine, I'd use a 5.8
a 5.8 has VERY similar torque & power Vs rpm to the 4.0.
