Wanting to swap my manual steering over to power steering on my 1988 ranger I know I have to have the gear box and few other things the problem I have is the pump and mount I have belts in my truck not just one big serpentine belt any recommendations on a good donor vehicle with going thru the trials of many!!! Thanks

I think it’s a bit more than just a parts swap. I’m not 100% sure but I think there is some wiring work that will have to be done. My general impression of the generation you have is that the wiring harnesses were more trim level specific than later generations. We’ll have to wait for those with more experience to chime in on the details.

I don’t believe there is any wiring work for power steering unless you do an electric power steering pump, like the Volvo pump.

Sounds like you have the old V-belt system, so ideally you would want brackets and stuff for a V-belt system, or go electric.

Yep, grab all bracketry and belts from an 88 or 87 with the same motor and with P/S. if you can afford it, go with a new pump and hoses (especially the hoses) and get a good quality reman box or even better yet a known good oem box for the steering.

Have fun :)

Ok, so you need to find a 4-cyl Ranger, or possibly Mustang, in the junk yard, get the brackets, a pump, box, lines, and a belt.

A lot of power steering systems have over pressure sensors or relief valves. Something like that. Not saying the Rangers of this vintage have that.

Not on one that old. My 09 and your 11 have a power steering pressure sensor that send info to the computer that it can use to increase idle RPMs, but not an 88.

I dunno, really sounded in your original post like you thought it did.

EDIT: Now that I have time to more properly reply. I tried to leave an out for error or misinformation on my part. I try and have tried to make sure that if I don't know for sure, I convey that. If what I posted seems counter to that, I stand corrected.

my 97 does not have that, but one of the new hoses i put on had the bung for the sensor on it and a cap if you didn't need it.
