My credo
Your character is demonstrated by your actions if you knew no one would ever discover them.
Is there a heavier duty, or more durable P/S pump available for 1996 Ranger XLT 4.0 SC? The Howe unit for Jeep is way too expensive ($1500) even if it does fit. What about pumps from F150 pickup, or Econoline van, or Super Duty? Thanks. a_r

ford used basically the same steering pumps and boxes on everything up to f-350's.

what could you possibly need a stronger pump for?

You could use a saginaw pump:

A 79' t-bird fits the 20-6244 #. It's the HD upgrade. It should be all metal. It fits the 3 hole mounts, but needs a little grinding to make it fit on the bracket.

The main thing that kills the pump is heat. Put a cooler in line with the low-pressure return side. Use a tranny cooler, got mine from a sploder for few bucks at the yard. Made a hell of a difference on my rig. Ya know, no more of that damn winning.

These are years they fit:

78-83 Bronco
84-87 Bronco Short wheel base
78-79 Cougar
76-78 Mercs
78-87 conversion vans
79-80 T-birds

Don't need stronger; need durable P/S pump

I do not need a "stronger" pump--I am looking for something more durable. The OEM unit went bad early. The other Big 3 vehicles that I have owned did not need a P/S pump replacement while I owned them, and I owned them longer and more miles than my Ranger. It is not an isolated incident, as I speak with several Ranger (and other Ford model) owners who have the telltale grinding sound emanating from their P/S pumps.

...a little grinding...

Thanks!
That's the info I was looking for!

I was not able to determine what grinding you did exactly, by the pictures, to get the Saginaw to fit. I should be able to repeat your install/remove/grind/repeat procedure until it works for me.

in-line P/S cooler...hmmm

With ambient in-the-shade summer temperatures here in Phoenix, Arizona, around 115, no wonder most 2-year-old Fords are making such a racket! I'm gonna try the Saginaw--it can't be worse than OEM!

I'll see if I can find one

Thanks, todd
With RepPower: 2, I gotta consider what you say! :icon_cheers:
