I HATED the tow mode downshifting on hills when I owned mine lol. There really just isn't enough compression in the little 2.3 to provide a meaningful amount of engine-braking imo... at least while towing. Kinda always felt that it was pretty much just winding out the motor for no good reason. Id honestly turn off tow mode before Id start going down a hill and turn it back on once I was at the bottom.Im just over 90k. I've pretty much ran it in tow mode it's whole life. I like the shift pattern better. The downshift on the hills is nice as well. Knock on wood I haven't had any issues. But again. I wouldn't attempt a rebuild but I would definitely do a swap with a junkyard find before trade in. Hopefully I dont have to deal with that anytime soon.
To be fair though.. all of my towing was at or near maximum capacity so... At that point it's a 6 or 7 ton rig. I'm sure it works at least a little better if all that's on the back is a utility trailer and some toys rather than an equipment trailer and a full size truck with a plow on it lol.
