Power all the time

I recently purchased a 2011 ranger sport. I installed power door locks and power windows today. Both aftermarket kits that i have also installed on my former 2006 ranger sport and my brothers 99 ranger.

This time however, when i used a fuse jumper and connected to the 30 amp fuse in the passenger compartment for the head lights, i have power all the time. Realizing the lamps can be turned on even with the ignition off, i moved the power wire to the fuse box under the hood. All of the 30 amp fuses that required ignition ex wipers, fuel pump, etc all turned out the same with power at the window switches all the time. I put it back to the passenger compartment since i could not close the under hood fuse box lid with the fuse jumper in there.

Anybody know what i am missing here?

Wouldn't you want constant 12 volt power to the switches so you can unlock the doors without turning the truck on? Im confused :icon_confused:

Some fuses will have power for 20-30minutes after key is turned off and doors are closed.
Then the Battery Saver Relay OPENS and cuts power to lights and other systems.

There will be some smaller amp fuses, 5-10amps, that you could use to activate a Relay you install, that has full time power, so you get Key on power/key off no power

But like Dirtman said, power doors locks and power windows can have power all the time and it won't drain the battery and it might be beneficial to be able to lock or unlock the doors or roll up or down a window without key being on

On factory versions the door locks always have power so the doors can be unlocked or locked by Fobs
And power windows have power with key off until you open a door usually

I'd leave it. When I installed power windows on my 87 I purposely wired them always hot specifically to avoid having to dick around with a key when I want the windows up or down.

As long as it is running on the proper sized fuse power all the time should be a non issue.

I should have been clearer that the power door locks are wired directly to have power all the time.

The powe windows have lights in the switches that i was concerned may drain the battery especially in cold weather. So that is why i wanted a keyed circuit.

Just use signal power for the relay from something like the radio or wiper fuse on the smart junction box in the cab.

Look at you, all Fancy Schmancy with lighted power window buttons :)

Yes, that would drain the battery

Thinking about it, didnt the kit have a separate wire for the switch lighting so you could wire the lights to only come on with the headlights? Seems odd it would be set up so the lights would be on anytime except night. :icon_confused:

Reply to Dirtman: i connected the wires according to colours as the instructions do not include any schematics. If i recall correctly, the switches light up when the ignition is on and not just with the lights turned on. The instructions for this kit are very poor.

Good to know I'm not the only one that did this.

Hmmm...

Maybe I could rig up a lighted window crank handle.
