Possible maf problem

I have a 99 ranger xlt with the 4.0. It is a 4x4. Not every time i drive it but its becoming more common, it will start rough and stutter when driving. The stuttering is more severe at about 1700 or 1800 rpm. Above that it tries to smooth out but is still rough.

My buddy suggested the maf could be bad. I would like some input to point me in the right direction.

I recently had a check engine light for a pre cat O2 sensor. I replaced that. Also the vent for my filler neck was broke for about a week but i also replaced that.
I no longer have a check engine light since fixing these.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Before you go replacing parts, try cleaning your MAF first and then replace if it does not improve. A MAF going bad is rare unless you are boosted and maxing out your voltage to it. Also look at your air idle control valve as well.

I had a similar problem with my 98 4.0. $1500+ later, come to find out it was the crank sensor. here go to this link, http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164134

Hopefully that helps! I learned the hard way, its always best to use code readers, pressure gauges etc, don't guess, save your money
