My idea is simple. But I would like to verify it before moving forward. I've searched and not found much on the topic. Long story short...Rescue a 4wd square body from a yard. Tow it home, pull its engine ( if there is anything left to it), drop my 2wd 3.0 into it and call it good to go. What difficulties or problems do you folks see with this plan? Is it plausable and as simple as an engine swap ( provided the rest of the vehicle isn't stripped)?

Thanks all.

If both trucks are the same year and 3.0s I would say it would be plug and play. But what if the transmission is shot? Or the front differential? I would look for a truck that has a running engine that is on its last leg this way you can drive it and assess the rest of the truck. An added bonus is that you don't have a salvage title on it and you can probably pick it up for 500 bucks

well i got a friend who has an 89 2.9L 4wd 5speed that he blew the heads on everything else is fine, in fact it passed ca smog last month so title is clean. I got a 3.0l 2wd 5 speed. Would it still be pretty much plug and play? His truck will only go to the yard if me and other friends don't scoop the whole truck or it in parts...

I do believe that 2.9 and 3.0 are completely *not* interchangeable. a 4.0 will replace the 2.9, but a 3.0 has a different bellhousing.
