A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
I first noticed this the other day after about 8 miles on the expressway at 70-75mph.

The exhaust leak got really loud, the truck sounded deeper at the donut gasket with the rusted flange.

I also began losing power....by the time i got off the freeway, went 1/4 mile down the ramp, all seemed to be well, and i went on down the road without issue. Even 40 miles home at 55 mph.

Now today, it did it again, at 55-65 after about 6 miles. Same thing. I pushed the clutch down, rapped it a time or 2, and the power came back but it still sounded funny.

Stopped at grocery store, shut it off for about 10 minutes, figured itd be fine after that. Fired it up and it was still doing it.

Got home and crawled underneath, the front cat was so hot i burned my hand, while the back one was cooler then a cup of coffee.

I also been smelling rotten eggs at warm idle if im outside the truck for a while now, but its gotten substantially worse lately. But theres still exhaust coming out the tailpipe.

Never had a cat plug...but does this sound like whats happenin?

Catalytic converters get hot (650-950)... you shouldn't be able to touch it at all without a trip to the hospital...

But with exhaust leaks its hard to test for a clogged cat. The common symptom is like hitting a wall where the truck simply won't go any faster. Id say since you need to fix the flange, take them off and visually check them.

Running rich melts them and causes the rotten odors.

Its really only leaking up by the drivers side manifold. The rest is pretty solid.

I dont think either cat was near that temp lol.

I guess ill pull it off and maybe do some doctorin' to it.

If theres a leak by the manifold before the o2 sensor, it will read lean, and add more fuel which can destroy the cat.

You probably need a cat. You will feel like you are getting sunburnt from a bad cat while the rest of the exhaust is cooler. You could wipe out the motor if you keep running it. Drill a hole before and after the cat and check the pressure with that one tool I forget the name of....

Fix the leak first.

Alright ill see what i can do with the donut.

Man, I thought you had a "cat" problem! I was waiting to hear that you found a crispy cat wedged in your exhaust when you crawled under your truck. I was thinking, how could that possibly affect the exhaust gasket:unsure:??? Doh!!! I worked all day, then tried to fix a noisy automatic hub or noisy brakes (???) when I got home, so I'm tired.

I was thinking he should just feed the cat to the dog...

Differential pressure gauge?

This is one for a vacuum gauge. IIRC run it at about 3000rpm and if vacuum starts dropping there is a clog in the exhaust system

my experience with a clogged cat was that the vehicle (a 82 faimont with a 200-6) got slower and slower, got to where it wouldnt go over 50 mph. once cat was off it would do 70 again.

It doesnt really feel like it wont accelerate/hold speed, but i gotta give it more throttle to keep the same speed.

I did the vacuum gauge test back when i had issues before but no one mentioned the 3000 rpm thing.

That test is kinda moot if theres also an exhaust leak before the cat.

The leak wasnt there the 1st time i did it...just the blown out converter gasket right infront of the cat :) lol.

Either way anyone know off hand what size the ypipe is? The pipe is fine its just the flange is rotted in half. Gonna try my luck with a split flange. I think its 2 inch but not sure.

My 3.0 has 2.25" exhaust. I would think a 2.9 would be the same.

But that's a guess.
